Hey guys,
Im totally new to this but I figure this is the best place for advice etc.
2 of my mates and I are planning a bike to from Melbourne to Brisbane along the eastern coastline.
Just wondering if anyone can give me some giood advice as to which roads to take, or where I can find information about this etc. I will do myown research of coarse but I thought there might be someone out there who knows the right place to look. Also is it possible to Ride on Highay 1 round aus? Are there certainroads you cannot ride on etc.
thanks,
I look forward tothe replies.
Cheers
Rob.

Ya mad bugga - hmm, you'll fit in well around here
I don't know that I'd be riding the Doom Dieway (Hume Highway) which I'm pretty sure is Highway 1. The thing about cycling is that freeways and major roads offer you no advantages in speed - you can clip along at the same 'pace', which on a tour is 'distance per day' not km/hr, whether you're on a main road or a back road. So, for Melbourne to Brisbane, I'd be digging out the maps and looking for a run up the coast or a run up the old mining towns - something to make the trip more interesting than just kilometres under the wheels.
The tourists will be able to correct me here but you aren't going to do more than 100-150km a day, day after day, so plan your route from town to town based on that (or as I'd view it, pub to pub).
You should be able to work out a really interesting and varied trip along the east coast

It is possible to ride all the way around on Highway 1. Here in the west, the highway is ridable. The only roads that bicycles are banned from are the freeways.oLDmATE wrote:Also is it possible to Ride on Highay 1 round aus?

There's $15,000 available to anyone who can break the around record for riding around Australia.
If the R-1 rule is broken, what happens to N+1?

We cycled Brisbane to Melbourne over 6 weeks starting Christmas 2011. It was incredible - our website provides some good advice for avoiding the Highway as much as possible. I can completely recommend taking a short inland detour along the Barry Way between Buchan and Jindabyne (see photo). Our full cycle tour log for the Brisbane to Melbourne cycle route can be found here
