Mornington Penninsula Touring Melb - Somers

Postby Curriepie » Mon Dec 14, 2009 5:59 am

Hi All,
I was hoping someone had information on best routes to travel if riding from central Melbourne to Somers (Hastings) on the Sth Eastern Mornington penninsula.
I'm doing the trip btn Christmas - Nw Year, so traffic might be busy. I did it 20 years ago, but now I'm from Newcastle, so I'm unsure of local conditions
IT looks like from the bicycle victoria website that the safest route is the Nepean Hwy, down the western side of the penninsula, as it seems to have bike lanes and or multiple lanes all the way down to Safety Beach.
From there I plan to ride to Red hill and use a train trail to cut across to the east to Merricks and from there a short stretch of single lane road without bike paths to SOmers. Any comments on or suggestions for improving this route?

The scenery is better if you leave the Nepean Highway at Mornington and take the coast road to Martha Cove but it is narrow and carries a fair amount of traffic.

That's all I know of the area.

Dear Mike,
Thanks.
I've since found out that there is a bike trail that runs along the Frankston Flinders Rd 10 km past Frankston and then all the way to Balnalring.
It is an inland route, and might not be as scenic, but it sounds safe.
I will follow up your tip when I am out on the ride whilst I'm staying on the Peninsula.
