I had the same thing on my first oil change. I understand some 25ml (?) remains permanently in the hub but still doesn't explain how 25ml cleaning fluid + 25 ml oil gives 25 ml oil+cleaning fluid mix

Hopefully one of you has the answer, what BB length is recommended to achieve a 54cm chainaline on a Nomad mk2 with the following specs:

cranks - thorn triple solo crank:
http://www.sjscycles.co.uk/thorn-110-74 ... -prod1673/

and this chainring:
http://www.sjscycles.co.uk/thorn-110-mm ... prod11053/

Cannot find the answer i need. Chainring to be installed on the outside, i am sure some people have this setup as its quite common

Thanks! :)

Ahh! Should have got back to you earlier on this. My BB is a 73-113*, but I have the chainring on the middle ring position. To place it on the outer ring postion you would need a 118mm axle length.

* the 73mm shell is actually a bit short, but the LH cup just screws in a bit deeper, and there's no problems with the crank.

I'm not sure that the bike makes a difference, but the crankset may. For my VN Pioneer I used a Stronglight Impact Rohloff 39T crankset (actually it's a rebranded Sugino XD2) from Dotbike, for which a 118mm BB axle was recommended, but I find the chainline isn't quite right. I'm fussy about these things and have ordered a 122mm BB to correct it. A UN54 68 x 122 BB was only $14 including free shipping from c r c so no big deal.

BTW, I ordered the crankset with the double chainguard but there wasn't enough clearance at the chain stay and I had to remove the inner guard. Perhaps with the wider BB I'll be able to refit it.

I've also ordered a 17T Rohloff sprocket and tool from Bike24 to adjust to the lowest recommended gearing.

Thanks for the feedback.

il padrone - what made you mount the chainring on the inside with 113mm rather than outside with 118mm then? I am not fussed about the inside/outside as long as its proven to work well.

Curious to find out how you go with the new BB and double chainguard RonK. What are the benefits of using single/dual chainguard, anything noticable?

Ta.

When I was building the bike I already had two BBs in the workshop - one a UN26 (brand new) and one a UN72 (slightly used). Both were 73-113. I chose to use the better quality BB, as it felt much smoother than the new low-quality one. Like you I was unsure about the BB axle length needed and fitted it to see. When the chainline was too wide I moved the chainring to the inside and it was spot-on :D

Saved me needing to buy a new BB.

Stop!! got that wrong. To use the outer position for the chainring I would have actually needed a shorter axle, something like 108mm.

Sorry, really talking through my a#$e there, just not thinking :o

For anyone who is after a similar answer, SJS Cycles advised me that a 110mm JIS bottom bracket would be required.

I was just checking the Rohloff prices on Starbike and spotted:
"The delivery of Rohloff SPEEDHUBs to Australia is unfortunately not possible."
They have changed their website quite a bit too.
I wonder if this coincides with there now being an agent in Australia

This is an error on Starbikes website, well it was a few months ago. It happened to Polishbiker when he was pricing up parts and sent off an email to them asking and they confirmed they could. Unless things have changed now...

Yes just saw that message, pity if true. With the falling rate of the Euro against the AUD it is a "bargain".

Well, no problem - Bike24 will probably offer a better price than Starbike anyway.

I got my Rohloff from Bike24 anyhow as I was ordering a Son28 from starbike along with spokes. Would have definitely put me into paying GST + Duty here.

How do you decide which version is suitable as far as internal or external gear mech?
If they are going start making it harder to import one, I'm might start thinking about taking the plunge and grabbing on for
future use.
My current bike has rim brakes but I'd consider getting a disk brake version for future upgrade paths.
I'm thinking I wouldnt want a quick release version as I'd feel it was slightly more secure utelising a threaded axle.
Thoughts anyone?

I'm not sure what you mean regarding secure, but if you are referring to theft then lockable skewers are available. The external mech is optional and can be added at any time If you are thinking about getting one now for future use I'd just order one with the torque arm (which is needed with your dropouts) and decide if you want to use an external mech later. But I'd bet once you've got it you'll want to use it.

Yep, i emailed them about it, they removed the message later, new website now so perhaps used old templates or something so message is back but no problem buying it.

As ronk said, bike24 would be cheaper tho.

Maybe. Depends on postage too. I have found that overall I can often do better at Starbikes.com than with Bike24.net. Bike24.net will charge you more for postage if the value of the order goes over a certain point, whereas Starbikes reduce the postage cost.

Also one needs to divide the price listed at Starbikes by 1.19 to remove the VAT.

Thanks for clearing that up Pawel :!:
I was worried that the Rohloff was going to become impossible to get from overseas due to "protectionism".
We see now products from Evans and Wiggle that are UK or EU only and I was wondering if this hub was heading in the same direction.
I'd rather not have to outlay a grand right now to just sit there until I'm ready for my next upgrade path which really I'd like to put
off for as long as possible or when something expensive breaks or wears out.
I'd like to get at least a year from my new Sram Dualdrive rear wheel before looking afield. :D

Just did a quick and dirty price comparison out of curiosity:

Product: Rohloff Speedhub 500/14 CC DB

Ex Bike24.net including postage - Euro 893.60
Ex Starbikes.com including postage - Euro 892.86

Very little actually in it, but Starbikes did come out in front.

So approx $1,112.01 AUD
Tis not chump change so good not to have to worry about Euro supply
being squeezed which is what was concerning me.

Keep in mind I picked the disk brake model for this comparison; you probably need one of the lower priced models.

Hm, if the price tag is so close then i would go for *bike then because of the delivery time.
Ordered a package from bike24 on 7th of December - arrived on 4th of January
Ordered a package from *bike on 19th of December - arrived on 4th of January

Not quite sure how it works! Both packages were delivered and arrived to Australia on the same day (DHL tracking), 1 hour apart.

For non-disc models you would generally spend just under 1000AUD$ so no tax/duty taxes! I am ordering my hub in the next few days.

**for CC EX OEM hub(anodized black) *bike is ~30AUD$ more expensive than bike24 so its money versus time**

I haven't had a warranty experience with Starbike.com but I have with Bike24.net. That experience is enough to swing me to Starbike.com.

It seems now that Rohloff are now doing a 36hole version of the hub. It's available on starbike, but not bike24 yet.
