Goulburn River High Country Rail TrailSounds like a good ride, any one riden it?
Re: Goulburn River High Country Rail TrailStill a very new trail, the surface is still settling. Some sections are fine, some sections are poorly compacted and have become rutted from heavy rain in the past 6 months.
Scenically it's a very good area - lots of potential for excellent side trips into the hills - Caveat and Highlands, Eildon, Snobs Ck, Ruffy, Strathbogie, the Howqua Hills, Jamieson...... You could easily spend a week riding the trail and doing some side tours. At 135kms it is going to be a 2-3 day ride to do the full length (the trail is not going to be as fast as riding the roads due to the softer surface). Riding bikes in traffic - what seems dangerous is usually safe; what seems safe is often more dangerous.
Re: Goulburn River High Country Rail TrailThanks old mate, it sounds good. I will have a look in November while I am at the OzHVP Rally at Myrtleford. Bob
Re: Goulburn River High Country Rail TrailFrom Myrtleford a good route to get there - along the Myrtleford-Glenrowan Rd to the King Valley Rd, head south to Whitfield. Then climb past Powers Lookout to Tolmie and then on down out of the hills to Mansfield.

Re: Goulburn River High Country Rail TrailJust returned from riding the trail from Tallarook to Alexandra. The surface is soft and wet so it was pretty hard work for much of the journey. Rutting was not really an issue. The black gravel is a very good surface but is only used in short sections. The rest is a granitic sand. Farm road crossings were particularly bad. A wombat has done some damage just after Yea. The bridges are all open and are very good.
Signposting at the start was not great so we spent some time looking for the trail. --Ken
