CrazyCycling - Around Oz

Postby Poiter » Fri Mar 15, 2013 8:08 am

On Friday 22 March 2013 at 0800, Ronny Andreasen from Denmark sets off from the Bell Tower Perth to attempt to better the Solo Un-supported Around Australia cycling record.
The current record for the 14,900km journey is 48d 23h 19m. Ronny only has to beat it by an hour.
He is going the full media route and has a website http://www.crazycycling.dk/ and facebook page. Lots of sponsorship and fund raising. Interviews etc.
Somehow the record has become a "World Record" in the translation - which I think the Guiness people might have something to say about.
It would be good if some local cyclists in Perth could roll down there to the start and see him off.

My estimations put him at the following locations on certain dates.
He may do better.
22/03/2013 Day 1 Perth
27/03/2013 Day8 Border Village
31/03/2013 Day13 Adelaide
03/04/2013 Day17 Melbourne
08/04/2013 Day 23 Brisbane
12/04/2013 Day 29 Cairns
18/04/2013 Day37 Katherine
21/04/2013 Day 41 Broome (close)
26/04/2013 Day 48 Perth

Hehe - well, even if he does eventually set a new record, you certainly set him a tough mark to beat. I can't help but wonder if he really understands the magnitude of the journey he has ahead of him.

Using Time Trial bars and Egg Beater pedals for over 350km per day?

Hope he completes it, it would be a epic achievement!

Guess he'll come through here so I'll keep an eye out on his spot tracker.

Don't know I'd want to be riding like that on a diamond frame. Seems like painful work to me.

"World Record" for cycling around Australia? Always makes me chuckle when I hear "world record" for cycling (or doing anything for that matter) that involves a local course

Quite a legitimate statement. There would also be an Australian record for cycling around Australia - that is currently held by Poiter. Should Ronny Andreasen succeed in setting a new record he will hold the World record, but not the Australian record. Poiter will still retain that.

Well, I thought that's how all such records work. Maybe Guiness just record the one result as "the record".

Well I guess if you choose a course that is different from someone else's then you will have to hold the record.

To my mind, If you want to break another's record then it needs to be the same course. Even then one may have done it on a road bike, another on a MTB or a recumbent. Perhaps a velo or lowracer or whatever.

Each can claim the record for their course and or mode. In my case it would probably be the world record for slowest.

So to create a real record the rules as to course, bike etc would need to be pretty specific. I believe someone recently set a new record but that was on a DF and it was a supported ride so entirely different to Poit's.

That said you have to admire all those who get out there and actually do it.

Unfortunately Ronny has ended his attempt after knee issues in the first three days.

That is bad luck. I feel for him. It's tough to come all that way and then have it go sour.
I think others before him had more than one attempt before completing if I remember rightly.
