Goolwa to Menningie along the coast

Postby Janine de fietser » Mon Sep 09, 2013 8:55 am

I want to know wether it is possible to ride from Goolwa to Menningie along the coast. I saw some bridges on google maps. Has anybody information about the track/road? Is there any fresh water along the route? I want to ride my bike from Adelaide to Moun Gambier (Great Vic Bike ride). After that I plan to ride to Sydney. All suggestions are welcome.

When I toured this area a couple of years ago I looked into the route I think you are hoping to do. You can access the bridge to Hindemarsh Island but after that the barrages are not accessible to anybody. The only options would be if there was a boat that took you across (I couldn't find one when I was planning my trip) or follow the road around via the Wellington (which is what I did).

After Wellington, if you wanted to access the Coorong you can follow Poltalloch Road which takes you to another ferry. This ferry links up with Narrung Road. Nice quiet roads with good scenery. Here is a link to that day Milang to Long Point

Thanks Brian,
Beautifull Blog. I am glad I posted this question so I am not going to waste a days cycling to have to turn around a go back. (we do have a time-limit, the Great Victorian Bikeride is not going to wait for us ;-)
I will definitely have a good look at your trip to plan mine. It's the first time I visit Australia, and I am really looking forward to this trip.

Technically this would be possible at lowish tide, the beach is reasonably firm.

The one problem is you have to cross the Murray River at the mouth, which is a killer when the mouth is flowing, it's a bloody big river, tidal and deep and flowing swiftly. And the barrages ain't possible as stated.

Short answer: no way.

Mind you if the mouth is closed it might be a fun, waterless, Little Adventure.
