Saw the Fitz Challenge is on this weekend and it got me thinking as I come up to the MS Gong ride with the return (roughly 200km) in 10 days that I wouldn't mind giving a really serious endurance ride a crack next year. It strikes me that I will need a lot more double centuries to take it on, but the idea of successfully getting this done is tickling my fancy.

Sydney > Stromlo 287kms
Fitz Challenge 253kms
Stromlo > Oberon 260kms
Oberon > Sydney 187kms

4 days. Self supported but sleeping in motels and living off a credit card. Of course using the compact / 11-32 WiFli combo to ensure climbing survival ;)

Have I gone mad?

Editted: Oberon looks to be a smarter point to finish west of the Blue Mountains, and its reasonably close to Jenolan caves :) Gets another huge number of climbing metres without retracing the steps.

2000m to Canberra, 5000m Fitz, looks like 2000m to Bathurst, maybe 1500 back to Sydney? Playing around with some routes, trying to sneak Jenolan and Mount Victoria in there. A lot of climbing, but it doesn't look like it's a lot of 10% heart breaker stuff. For the cross country bit anyway.

I'm liking the sound of this already.

No - it's quite a modest objective compared to Lachies goal and the training rides he has been putting in. Perhaps you should team up...

If you want to get amongst the hills between Canberra and Oberon, go from Mulligans Flat to Gundaroo, Gundaroo through Lerida to Bredalbane, Bredalbane through Goulburn to Towrang turnoff, over Swallow Tail Pass that crosses the Tarlo River to Taralga. Taralga to Jerong Road. Jerong Road across the Abercrombie River, through the Tuglow Forests to Oberon.

If you take on the Bicentennial National Trail from Healesville to Cooktown, you will effectively have climbed and descended Mount Everest 10.6X ... averaging 850m climbing each day.
