Campsites near Benambra

Postby il padrone » Sun Nov 24, 2013 10:10 pm

I'm planning a group tour over Christmas to the Cobberas, and the itinerary will leave us a bit short of getting to Natve Dog Flat in one day from Swifts Creek. Does anybody have any local knowledge of any campsites (basic bush site will do us just fine) around Benambra, between Benambra and The Cobberas. I know there is no caravn park on Benambra, and there is a campsite at Hinnomunjie but that is really in the wrong direction for us.

Otherwise it may have to be a camp at Omeo and visit the Chinese Diggings before a longer day through to Native Dog Flat.

Oriental Claims isn't really very interesting. Just a great big weedy hole in the ground. :D
I know most of the landholders in and around Benambra. One in particular is about 5km's East of Benambra on the Black Mountain Rd. I'm sure he wouldn't mind a few cyclists camping for a night if I ask him. There is freehold land for quite some distance further East along the Black Mountain Rd, most of which I can probably gain permission to camp on. Where exactly would you prefer to camp? PM me.

Hi il padrone, This probably going the wrong way as well.
I us the caravanning bible "Camps7" , but even it doesn't show much in that regard. How ever, it shows a camp at its number 141 called "Dogs Grave Campground" as an over nighter.

Quote from cams 7
"Camp area 22 klm SW of Omeo or 44klm NE of Dargo.

Turn S off B500, 3 km West of Omeo onto Swifts Creek- Omeo Rd for 7 km,

then SW onto Upper Livingstone Rd for 6 km,

then onto Birregun Rd for 6 km. Winding dirt road.

Hema 64 f7 in the camps book. 37 14 01 S 147 22 51 E "

It has been many years since I have been there and that was 4 wheel driving (Yes I own a dreaded Land cruiser) I remember a river on the road out but not sure of the distance. We used to just camp near any rivers we found.

Here is another camp but it also may be too far. the pages are from the camps book also. Camp 122 may be of interest.Every thing seems out of reach. :D

Thanks for the tips guys. I am aware of those campsites, but mostly they are in the wrong direction from where we will be heading. Friends have camped at Dogs Grave, it is a quaint but remote spot, up a good big climb (~1100m) - but SW from Omeo and we are going to the east of Benambra.
