Route --Sydney to Melbourne, next 2 months

Postby CyclistST » Wed Mar 26, 2014 8:51 pm

Hi there,
We're in Sydney, route planning for the next 2 months. We are thinking of heading to Melbourne, via the coast or inland. From reading posts on this forum, it seems the coast may be the best as we head in to winter. Any other tips or thoughts on routes? Best way out of Sydney? We're keen to stay off of highways as much as possible.
If anyone has other thoughts --Sydney heading north is better?-- please share them! We have until the end of May for our bike tour here. Thanks for your help!

Why head south at this time of year? As winter approaches you get shorter days and longer nights.. and colder weather .. for those reasons you'd be better off heading north ... Or are you set on Melbourne?

Catch a train out of Sydney to somewheres quite and ride from there?

Inland Victoria (and southern NSW too I'd guess) has ideal, delightful cycling weather from now until late May. Not so good for swimming (too cool for me) but ideal cycling and camping weather - crisp, cool nights and clear, sunny days for long periods. I would recommend this as the best time to travel here.

But heading north may be quite good too.
Riding bikes in traffic - what seems dangerous is usually safe; what seems safe is often more dangerous.

I agree entirely with il Padrone. Autumns are lovely traveling weather this time of year. You'll probably have drier conditions if you stay West of the Dividing Range.
