Can't give any specific advice myself.

Flying with a budget airline is often not the cheapest option. It all depends on how much you need to take. I would take a serious look at other airlines, taking note of their checked in luggage allowance. When I went over from Melbourne to Auckland Qantas were by far the cheapest once excess baggage was taken into account.

I flew tigerair Sydney-Adelaide a couple of months ago. No problems with checking in a bike box weighing less than my allowance of 17 or 20 kgs (can't remember which). I rode to the airport - last km was fun - and bought a bike box at the qantas service desk in terminal 3, collected from oversize baggage in the same terminal. Give yourself plenty of extra time for that if u do it the same way. .
