Mandatory helmet law?

I was curious about that image and I managed to work out that it's Edward Reichenback:
http://www.adventure-journal.com/2014/0 ... australia/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; One hundred years ago last week, Edward “Ryko” Reichenback broke the speed record for riding across Australia south to north, covering 3,000 kilometers, or almost 1,900 miles, in 28 days. He set off from the post office in Adelaide and finished at the p.o. in Darwin four weeks later, having suffered no major mishaps but losing riding partner John Fahey to a sprained ankle a week into the ride.
Despite the ominous looking photo above, title “gantlet of spears,” Rkyo got on well with the indigenous people, who, judging from this picture and the one below, were plenty willing to ham it up for the camera.

Yep. The photo was a bt of a staged affair - a practical joke by a guy who was always the show-man.

There's a few more photos from the trip in one of the most unlikely sources: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article ... arwin.html
