Cycling from Cairns to Melbourne

Hi,

A friend and I are planning to cycle from Cairns To Melbourne in June-July of 09, and need some help to start planning the trip.

We are both 18 and keen cyclists and thought this would be an amazing experience and something that will make our CV's stick out from the rest.

So, if anyone has done this trip or part of it, or has any suggestions about how to start planning routes etc, please feel free to post below.

Andy, the first thing that comes to mind is WEATHER. If you start in beautiful Cairns in winter and head south it will get colder and colder.

Have you thought of starting in Melb (it will be cold and wet) and slowly heading north to the warm glow of Cairns and QLD. The weather will pick up by the time you get to Sydney.

Just a thought.

It will be an epic ride either way, "one for the books"

Another factor to consider is wind. The usual pattern is for the wind to blow from the south east especially along the Queensland coast.
Most people touring Australia as part of a loop tend to go anti clockwise in part because of this.
