Hi everyone,
I'm new to this site so forgive me if I am posting in the wrong place.
Does anyone know of any upcoming group tours from Adelaide to Melbourne? I'm thinking around September 2016 when the weather gets nicer?
Thanks,
Avi

Hello Avi,
I think you will find most of the members posting in this forum are be independent tourists.
If you are looking for a organised tour package your best bet is probably going to be a web search - but I don't see any current tours.
AllTrails ran an Adelaide-Melbourne tour last year but don't have it on their current offerings. It may be worthwhile contacting them to see if there are any plans for a repeat. Or you may be interested in an alternative. The Tassie rides would be highly recommended.

Adelaide to Melbourne is really not a winner in the mass-market that supported bike tours are. Too long; not enough scenic highlights and cultural attractions along the way to grab their attention. Mind you, it IS a really great ride to do - allow 2-3 weeks to best enjoy the attractions along the way, and probably best to ride the coastal route. I have done it myself, and despite the headwinds we battled*, we had a great tour.
* Season matters - ride east to west in summer with the SE breezes; west to east in winter with the NW storms.

Thanks for the feedback. I'd actually prefer to go by myself or in a small group of individuals. The tour package is only because my wife worries. If I had 1-3 other individuals, that would probably also satisfy her.
(Obviously the September thing never happened.)

What is her concern? I done quite a number of cycling tours and riding solo is my preference. Read some of the journals on crazyguyonabike.com and you will find plenty of tourists (both male and female) who have cycled all over and around the world solo.avichapman wrote:Thanks for the feedback. With a smartphone you can keep in contact most places, or you can get a tracking device such as a Spot Tracker or Delorme Inreach, although these are expensive and I would consider them overkill in Australia unless you planned to ride into the remote outback.
For her peace of mind you could schedule to send her a text each day when you set out, when you stop for lunch, when you finish riding for the day.
Or you could use an app such as TrackMyTour so she can monitor your progress.
There are also quite a number of panic apps which can notify emergency services and herself with a tap on the screen.

I don't have a coherent picture of what her concerns are, though I think they centre around the possibility of being hit by a car. But she is more comfortable with me being on a city street than in the country - which doesn't gel with her concern about cars.
She can't clearly spell out her concerns becuase, in the end, it's not the front of her brain that is doing the worrying. So all I can do is propose ideas and see which ones she can live with.

Well, as a touring cyclist, I do see reports from time to time where others have been hit by cars. Ironically it's almost always when passing through town/cities where such incidents occur, not on quiet country roads.avichapman wrote:I don't have a coherent picture of what her concerns are, though I think they centre around the possibility of being hit by a car. Whatever, touring in a group is unlikely to reduce the possibility of such an incident.
