Well i'm not confirmed if i'll be traveling along or with a partner yet.. (i'm going across aus)

So that'll decide exactly which way i end up going... I'll be getting front/rear racks fitted regardless...

as far as spending more on a bike goes - that's all well and good, but i've heard some very good things about the fuji... enough to make me doubt that spending another $800+ for the surly is exactly smart.

edit: looks like nicky from bike force south perth has found this thread too! *waves*

atleast i'm guessing so - nick and mick have left comments on my website, and i haven't advertised it in many other places yet :P

I can only assume they've read this article i wrote about my search for a bike also :)

Is this their site? I mean, if you're going to get all surly, ya may as well go all the way ... ;)

Now there are some proper fenders!

Using your dynamo to recharge electronics? Sounds good to me.

I visited clarence st cyclery today, in sydney, on the off chance that they might have something in stock...

they had a trek 520, which DID look pretty nice... i did find it odd that it was a 43cm size though... why would you get one in that size in stock?

54 or 56 i can understand, easier to sell... but 43? odd.

DID look nice though(didn't have time to test it, even though the wrong size), but i'm not sure it'd be worth 2k, not when you can get a surly built up for that kind of price.

Cute staffmember that served me though :P

Female... shortish blonde girl, around 20 or so i'd say... i'd definitely have stayed longer if i wasn't heading to the airport at the time, and thought i'd just drop in when i saw the sign..

:P

no pics though, that'd be rude :)

Of course, talking about her behind her back to the whole of the country isn't rude at all ... ;)

Just found this on ebay....

Looks to me to be a 1987 Trek 520 "Cirrus"

How much work would it be to convert that to a 9 speed drivetrain?
edit: and 700c conversion from 27"? possible?

Would it be worth playing around with, for some serious touring?

G'day

I would suggest if you are going to go to all the trouble of a drivetrain conversion and wheel conversion then you would want to pay a lot less for the frame.

What frame dimensions are you after again?

I have a circa '89 Shogun 'Alpine GT' touring frame (~56cm square, 102cm wheelbase), and a circa '86 Malvern Star 'Sprint' 'road' frame (also 56cm, 104cm wb). Both are double butted CrMo.....

What is involved in a 27" > 700c conversion?

Also, what about the drivetrain conversion?

What is the chain stay length on these frames. Photos? Dollars? Braze ons?

After reading this post and looking at all of the bikes I got lucky. So now I have a 9month old Surly LHT with Rohloff and full ortleib bag set for $1500...so they are out there second hand if you can be bothered.

just a thought after skipping through the thread, but is it worthwhile having front shockies for long distance, especially if the tarmac is a bit bumpy?
