Not my cuppa tea, but don't dismiss such bikes as
radical For a touring bike this would be far more radical IMHO.

Alright.
I bit the bullet.
Put down on a deposit for a Surly LHT, to be built by Bike Force, South Perth.
The guys in there seem to know what they're doing, pretty switched on operation.

Well...
54cm frame, cherry red. Going to be running mostly deore gear.
Throwing eurobars on it.
obviously 26" rims, which will also help in that 26" tubes are easier to find than 700c, out in the middle of nowhere.
Pretty much told micky to just go nuts, so long as the cost is about $2000.

Hi there guys. New here but thought I would throw in an interesting fact. On page 4, that Allegro Touring Bike went on eBay about 5 weeks ago for a "Steel"...............pun intended.............................Sale price was $305.00 or there abouts if memory serves I threw a bid in for $250.00 but missed the end of the auction !!
Me ? Not really a tourer per se. I get about on an 07 Jamis Coda Comp. Cro -mo frame,carbon/alloy crown forks so no chance of a decent front rack but a pretty comfortable ride. I picked it up stock for $500.00 about a year ago, 2nd hand and well and truly "as new". Had 115 kilometres on the speedo !! Came with those crappy Shimano WHR-500 wheels on it so I got a set of Velocity "Deep V's made up with 32 hole, 105 hubs and DT Double Butted spokes as I am a pretty heavy 120 { on a good day !! } kilos. Rims are shod with the brilliant Schwable Marathon 700x28's which are brillaint everyday / general rolling around tyres. Have had about 15 kilos on the back also with no dramas and the frame is a compact effort too so nice and easy on my troublesome back. May not sound it but quite a sweet ride. Not too fast not too slow................Well, I like it anyways lol
Am looking though, after Christmas at dumping the car totally so might well be looking (AT) something nice and solid.................AKA LHT or possible a Fuji { I live in Wollongong and Spearman's Cycles actually stock or used to stock Fuji bikes so I may be able to get a decent deal !! } Have found this thread really helpful and hope to be a frequent-ish poster and visitor.

I've recently built up a LHT for my wife which she is using as a commuter and really likes.
I have just changed over her handlebars on her road bike to the 3T ergosum and she finds them to be much more comfortable with the flat top section.
I put the FSA equivalent on the front of the tandem that we used for the around the bay in a day ride and found them very nice. I've got a set of the 3T bars on order for the roadie.
If you are doing long miles drop bars give more positions for comfort and make headwinds a lot easier.

Well. If you persevere. there are bargains to be had out there. An 07 Fuji Touring is up on eBay for a $450.00 start bid and $650 "Buy It Now". Only dont 1200 kilometres. It is though that nasty "Metalic Turd" Colour. Size is 56cm. Located in Victoria.
As for my ride. Just swapped the Tru-Vativ 175mm triple cranks with a Tiagra 170mm triple to suit my stumpy legs!

Yeah. I'd have a look myself if it were in my neck of the woods. not that I need another set of wheels but for the money. Why not ! Saying that though. If I drop some KG's between now and later next year. I'll most likely treat myself to a Surly LHT...................................Hi ho hi ho , only 28 kilos to go !!! Lol

Yeah. What can I say. Turned 40 this year and now,simply put, can really "feel" the weight so I have to sort it out. 30 ish degrees here today and I feel pretty uncomfortable to say the least.

I'll be taking my pedals, seat, and shoes down to Bike Force South Perth on the weekend to pick her up and ride her home

Sweet ride you have gotten yourself there ! Funny how what with the old school tubes and all the 54cm looks HUGE frame-wise hey ?
Seeing the bar bag.......................get this.............. I just scored a fully waterproof,once used Ortlieb effort off of eBay for FIFTY BUCKS!!! Retails ? $249.00 !! It comes with a shoulder strap too which is well handy.
Must admit. I do like the no nonsense look of the LHT's. I would though, be confident to tour on my Jamis to be honest. Although the carbon forks make it impossible to put racks on the front so I'd prob need a trailer of some sort.
As of the new year. I am fully set up for my commute to and from work as the wife will be the only one with a car. I think I have eveything I'll need. Got enough Vistalite nightsticks to last me a lifetime { yet more eBay shenanegans!! } and clothing ,pannier bags etc etc. Am a bit overkillish on lights as I got hit { and left } a few years back when out on an early morning ride..............................
Anyway. I'll stop prattling on like my mother in law and wish everyone here a safe and Happy Christmas and New Year .

Looks great. Will be interested to see how you find the trekking bars.
What are your chain ring sizes and what cluster have you gone with?
BTW like the look of the SLX gear too.
