What place it that? A forum game for touring cyclists...

Postby RonK » Tue Jan 03, 2017 12:27 pm

What place is that?

What place is that? A forum game where the players try to guess the location of the subject in a picture.

The game is just for fun. Any forum member is able to contribute a guess or ask a question at any time.

Playing the Game

Players try to guess where the subject of the picture is located.

The person who guesses the correct location will get to post the next picture.

The picture posted should be a scene with good detail and plenty of visual cues to help people work out what place is that.

As the world is a big place, when posting a picture please give the country and region the picture is from.

All forum members can play the game.

Players may ask questions to narrow down the choices.

The person who posted the picture, or an appointed proxy, must answer the question and may also volunteer extra information or clues if he/she chooses.

The player who guesses the correct location wins.

The winner must either:
a) promptly post a new picture, or
b) give his/her turn to another person who can promptly post, or
c) post a forfeit, in which case any player can post the next picture.

Keeping the game moving

If you are the poster of the picture, answer questions as promptly as possible.

If no progress is made within 24 hours then the poster should volunteer some additional clues.

If you are the winner, post a new picture as quickly as possible.

If the winner does not post within 1 day (24 hours), the turn is forfeited and anyone can post - the first person to post gets the turn.

If the winner forfeits without nominating (option c) then anyone can post and the first person to post gets the turn.

If more than one picture is posted as a result of a forfeit, the first picture posted is the new entry and other entries should be edited to remove the picture, to avoid confusion.

Defaulting on a turn

Proxy: If a person posts a picture and then is unable to monitor the game, he/she may select another player to act as proxy and PM the correct answer to that player. (PM the site Moderators/Administrators if no one else is available).

Forfeit: A person can of-course forfeit their turn at any time by simply posting the correct answer and normal forfeit rules apply. This is a less preferable option. Proxy is a better choice if at all possible.

This is a popular game on the Bushwalking.com site. The description of play and the rules set out in the first post are adapted from there.

I will kick the game off with an easy one - this scene is in Tasmania.

Perhaps. I don't know. I think there is a forum limit so try resizing the picture if it is huge.

My picture is also from Google+ and the metadata is: 1.9 MP 1200 × 1600 364.1 KB

So it is a fairly small file.

OK, while bicyclewarrior is getting his link sorted out I'll post another picture to keep the game rolling.

This one is in New Zealand, South Island.

I can't see it Firefox or Safari on my iMac or Safari on my iPhone. And I'm logged in to Google+

But if you can see it Ben, what place is it?

I can't answer the NSW question, but your's has to be the Salmon farms on the canal near Lake Pukaki.

Yes, That's right Ben - it's the Mt Cook Alpine Salmon farm on the Tekapo Canal.

I'm sure you'll have an interesting picture to post.

BenGr, the summit on Mount Evans on the Front Range? Mount Evans has the highest paved road in the United States. It is good to see the bike in the shot. I hope you enjoyed the climb ... and the descent.

bicyclewarrior, the Bunda sea cliffs of the Great Australian Bight?

Warren.

Correct.

I did enjoy it, in more of an achievement way, I felt a lot worse than Pikes Peak. The descent was a bit rough as well, you can definitely tell that not much money is put in, the lack of cars was nice though.

Thank you Ben. How did your time compare summiting Pikes Peak to the hill climbers, that give Pikes Peak it's fame? From a standing start of course ... rolling starts are too easy?

Where is my bike ... in rural NSW.
