Gattamurgh Creek Hut

Postby Mugglechops » Thu Nov 16, 2017 1:11 pm

Has anyone been here? Planning on going down the Barry Way then cutting across to here before heading to MacKillops Bridge rd and Delegate.

Someone must have been there, otherwise it would be just Gattamurgh Creek.

Sorry bad attempts at humour are all I've got. Sounds like a great trip though

Don't know anything about it, but it looks like it could be a great ride on Google Maps. The hut is a little off-route though and there is a good climb back up to ridgeline.

Is there a ford across the Snowy?

Amazing to see the Snowy River Road is on Street View. There are a couple of side tracks heading down to the river but no obvious exit on the other side.

There is no ford across but it's not real deep. I have camped on that side before but not ventured over there.

Will be all part of the fun when we get there. :D

I have camped on that bend of the river too in years gone by. Great sandy beaches (banks). I've also done feral animal survey work there for ParksVic.
I can confirm that there are lots of pigs, horses, deer, rabbits and foxes. No evidence of cats but they're probably there.
I can also confirm the water isn't deep unless there's an environmental release from Jindabyne. Might be worth checking. I think it's around this time of year they do the releases.

Cheers Tim

If it's too deep we will just head around and cross at Mackillops Bridge.

Leaving from Nerriga on the 26th and going to The Big Hole campground near Majors Creek, then to Cooma, Jindayne, Barry Way to the hut, Bomballa, Braidwood then home via mostly dirt to Nowra.

7-8 days and about 850kms.

100km+ days are big touring days for me, especially in mountainous country.
I think I recall you've taken to bikepacking so bigger days will be more easily achievable than my kitchen sink style of touring.
Enjoy yourself.

Well the ride to the hut didn't happen. We got to Cooma on Monday and the forecast made us change plans. We didn't want to get stuck out in all the rain that is now hitting the area.

Instead we went from Cooma to Queanbeyan via Shannons Flat then Queanbeyan to Braidwood and then to Nowra.

Still a great ride though.
