Highway bike access?

Postby EvaTheDiscTrucker » Wed May 30, 2018 2:40 pm

Hi!

I'm kinda new to bike touring after a 30 year break.

I just finished walking solo unsupported around Australia and know a fair chunk of highway is not accessible for pedestrians but i am unfamiliar with bike access.
For starters, can i ride the A1 from Adelaide to Port Wakefield?

Cheers
Eva and Terra

That section is not designated as motorway so I can't see why not.

In fact if you put Google Maps into Bicycling view the A1 is shown as being bicycle friendly or having dedicated bike lanes all the way out of the city.

Andrew Melville left on this route a few days ago. You may find his crazyguy journal of interest.

Adelaide to Darwin.

It is a double lane highway, both ways from Adelaide to Pt Wakefield. It is quite busy and most cyclists ride it when touring. It then drops back to a single lane highway from Pt Wakefield to Port Augusta and beyond.
A scenic route from Adelaide to Port Augusta is via the Clare Valley, Gladstone, Melrose and Wilmington, finally into Port Augusta.
Basically there is a range of hills running north / south from Adelaide through to Port Augusta and beyond. The main highway, where all the traffic goes, is on the western side of the hills. The scenic route is on the eastern side of the hills. The scenic route is single lane road. At some point you will have to cross the hills from the scenic route to get to Port Augusta.
Melrose has a mountain bike "Fat Tyre Festival" every year http://www.bikemelrose.com.au/fat-tyre- ... elrose.php

Yes, I would recommend staying away from the A1 as much as you can, especially on sectors within 100-200 kms from major cities. The route out to the east (Barossa, Clare, Melrose, Quorn) is far, FAR nicer. You also get the delights of the Rattler & Reisling Trails, and can even use the Mawson Trail if you have some time available.

G'day all
I know this is an old thread but didn't know where to post. Anyway I've been following a youngish guy on you tube in his travels around Australia.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SPDmryZacAE
Anyway he states that he started out on the M1 from Melbourne through Gipsland and up across the boarder into Eden NSW and so on so on. And I believe hes up around Marybough Qld.
Anyway just wonder if anyone has traveled this main Hwy route on here ans wonder how it was?
