French Island

Has anyone done any touring around French Island.

Will only be an overnighter maybe two nights.

I haven't taken a bike but have walked in to the Nat. Parks campsite. You can take a bike on the ferry but might might pay to check if you need to provide notice. From memory roads were pretty sandy. Also be aware of fire risk in summer. And tides if you plan on swimming. Low tide = mud flats. Hope this helps

Haven't done it since a kid 20 years ago.
Took the bike over on the boat from stony point and camped. I just remember most of the inland tracks had 1 - 2 foot of tea-tree tinted water all over them. Was awesome fun as a kid, not so good for the bike!

Great riding on most of the main roads in winter, and spring. Firm roads.




Can be prone to dampness on Red Bill Rd and Clump Rd.



The roads around Mt Wellington and up to The Pinnacles tend to be sandy, as does the road out to the McLeod EcoFarm.



I have toured there several times and done overnight camps staying at Fairhaven on the west coast. Best to avoid late summer as the roads dry out and sand gets very soft.

I will be on a plus bike or I could take my Fatbike so sandy roads won't be an issue.

Depending on what bikes I take with me I will either camp or stay somewhere on the island.

My plans have been changed and now I won't be heading down this far. Will be in East Sale instead.
