Its almost the answer to the question nobody asked.

Whats wrong with a rear rack?

I suppose it could be handy behind a unicycle.

Timbo,

The idea is to give extra carrying capacity for touring cyclists who have already used up all their space on the racks. Tandems are one type of bike where a trailer is quite valuable - they give up two racks compared to two normal bikes.

The larger diameter wheel reduces rolling resistance.

Cheers,
Graeme

I ride a Giant TCR C1. There is no way I could or would mount a rear pannier. I ride up to 400+ kms per week. A round trip to my local supermarket is 35kms. The Extrawheel trailer is ideal for my requirements. I'm just trying to save up to purchase same.

Last time I checked, postage for an ExtraWheel was extortionable!!

I'm still in two minds as to what i'll use on my 'cross australia trek...

Options are, Panniers, Panniers + Extrawheel, or Front Panniers + BOB....

I'm kinda more leaning towards the last option, so far... Have front + rear racks fitted, use a BOB for most stuff, and have day-use gear in the front panniers....

Dunno... Just thinking aloud, again.

The design isn't exactly hard to copy is it? Surly a local frame builder would be able to help out. (Leaving any potential patent issue aside)

extrawheel trailer

Postby llew51 » Wed Dec 31, 2008 8:27 pm

I had the chance to use one in Japan ,travelled light on road and off road.Had to keep looking over my shoulder to see if it was still there.Super light, no noticeable drag like larger trailers, especially uphill, worried about downhill runs , but that was put to rest early on.Offroad it was a blast didn't get hooked up or jackknife. It was like one of those little kangaroo rats it just seemed to hop over everything.Learnt very early on not to overload and make sure the loads are balanced.Ran small panniers on rear rack of MTB and the extrawheel was the classic model with the dry bags and draw string mesh. The only distributors are in Singapore and Japan for this trailer.I checked out the home site as well as UK sites and cost of purchase plus freight is outrageous, still trying to get through to Speedmatrix in Singapore.Definitely going to get one wish there was a distributor here in Australia .$ not so good.

Extrawheel Voyagers available through Bike Trailer Shop

Postby Josh » Sun Jan 04, 2009 11:02 am

Hello Folks,

I wanted to let you know that the Extrawheel Voyager is available through our web store in the US, Bike Trailer Shop.
As a new user, I cannot post a link to these forums.
To find our listing do a Google search for Bike Trailer Shop and navigate through the site to the Extrawheel category.

We can ship the Voyager to Australia via USPS Priority International Mail (6-10 business days) for $40.
We can only ship it with the USPS without the wheel. With the wheel it is too large and must go via FedEx for around $200.

Many of our customers prefer getting the Voyager without the wheel as it uses as a standard front bicycle wheel (26" to 28") and either a spare wheel or a wheel matching your bikes wheels and tires can be used.

Our web store is not configured for international orders so if you are interested in ordering, please email us to get the process started.

We carry the Extrawheel panniers as well as a large variety of panniers at our other web store, Bike Bag Shop.
We can add panniers and other items to your order for around $10-$20 more in shipping.

Happy 2009!
Josh

I am looking at an Extrawheel as an option down the track.

I currently have a Bob Ibex, which followed a Yakima Big Tow. I purchased the Ibex and a CELLO case (for bike and Bob trailer) from Josh whilst in Canada — and they have traveled across the pond 3 times now. He is very helpful and quick to assist when asked.

I can see an ExtraWheel being a bonus on longer cycling trips. You bust your front wheel up, your ExtraWheel can replace it and you just have to lump the panniers. You wreck your rear wheel, you just have to spend some time rebuilding it using your spare rim.

The ultimate in Extra-wheel design would be that it runs on a dynamo hub and has an integrated red light on the back. Not that people tend to tour at night, but it would be a real bonus in times of poor visibility that every tourer runs into eventually. Well, come to think about it there are places where you would try to ride some stages at night because of more ideal weather and road/traffic conditions.

I have one of these trailers and used if for a 1500km ride from Brisbane to Canberra and loved it! I highly recommend them. You can hardly tell that your towing it behind you even when hill climbing. I was pleasantly surprised. I usually have two large panniers on the trailer and two small ones on the back of the bike and just a handle bar bad on the front. The best thing about these trailers is the mechanism to hook it to your bike. All you do is put a new skewer in and it clips on. Makes it really good if you need to do some work on the bike or if you want to go for a ride without it, it just unclips. Really good if you have multiple bikes to. I got mine from the Australian distributer, same guys that sell Buff ( http://www.extrawheel.com.au/home.html ). I'm always happy to show people the trailer if anyone is interested, cause I hate buying stuff without getting a chance to see it first. North Brisbane.

I'll say!
One issue i have, and will have touring the country, is that at a nominal weight of 97 Kg's I can tend to bust spokes if I slack off on the rear wheel maintenance, a unit like this could reduce weight on the rear wheel etc.

Then again, the unit brings about a whole set of maintenance issues on top of your bike, lots of things to weigh up with pos and cons.

$250 or so delivered sounds pretty good though.

What sort of maintenance?? I have one and it only has two moving parts, apart from the wheel. The alloy frame is very robustly made with a large gusset to give rigidity and the tie-bar looks slim but is made out of spring steel. I can foresee very few maintenance issues beyond caring for a wheel bearing and lubing the QR joint occasionally.
