i am up for any time over the weekend, pref mornings

mark, it means that we just ride...as everyonr rides a different speed up hill then you just ride at what ever pace you want.

keen to follow up with a Granton return...optional

Hey mate

Cheers for the offer but ive gotten into the habit of taking the mtb for a spin on sundays the last couple of months. I was thinking about checking out the Clarence mtb park or just the usual grinding up some ungodly steep firetrail  I have not been on the roadie since I last saw you, ive been running around on the 520 shopping for the last bits and pieces for the trip so thats been enough.

Have a good ride, with the forecast for the week looking rancid!, tomorrow is the day 8) Its going to be 17 ffs!! woohoo

Barry, not surprised Granton hurt, wish I could have done it as well. Went for a ride Sunday on my MTB with my daughter on the back, up to the Springs (from my place). Now that was hard work... Bike + daughter = 40kg...

a little off topic.... what gearing are you folks using to climb the Mt?

hope to be in Hobart end of Jan 2012 and aim to try and get to the top.... lowest gearing I have is 42/28 which, I think, may be a real struggle for my level of fitness.....

Depends on your fitness level. I lent a bike to a mate for the ride recently with 42-23 low gear and he made it up easily. I really struggle with a 39-28. It's not incredibly steep, just very loooong.

I'll be on a steel frame 80's road bike, 27" wheels, 5 or 6 speed freewheel, 52/42 crank.... hhmmmm... close to a fixie

LG that is encouraging that your mate made it with 42/23.... I'll be giving it a red hot go no matter what, I don't care if it takes me all day to get up there....

I've made it to the top on a ten-speed, 80's Repco roadie with standard gearing, despite my destinct lack of climbing ability...

Wasn't fun though - I'd recommend borrowing or hiring something with a triple chainring or at least a compact for the day if you can.

I rode Wellington many times on my Repco Superlite, even did the Mt Wellington Challenge on it. The only bit that's hard going is between 800 and 1000 metres where the gradient is around 10%. Just pace yourself and you'll be fine.

No-one should ever be riding a triple unless its a MTB :P

try borrowing a compact 50/34 with a 11-27, thats all you need to comfortably get up there
