Nickname for STCC?

Nickname for STCC?

Postby master6 » Fri Jan 27, 2012 1:43 pm

The Southern Tasmanian Veterans Cycling Club was referred to as "the vets club" in conversation.

The club name has now been changed to Southern Tasmanian Cycling Club. This is a bit of a mouthful mid sentence, and a short term or nickname is called for.

The only term that comes to mind at the moment is "stick", pronounced with a strong Kiwi accent as "stck".

What do you suggest?

(terms such as "old farts", "geriatrics", etc are not available, as they are already in high use with the caravanning community)

Your attitude is unacceptable Barry; this would mean that the change was somewhat in vain. (?)

Wait a minute; was that really "vats", with a kiwi accent? :D

I think in keeping with the intent of the name change they should now be known as "the young vets" :P

Ok I'll be serious for a change!

I think its a good question, mostly because I have been thinking the same thing when I talk to someone about the club.

For what its worth I think those with an association with the club before the name change will always know it as the vets. Even someone like me who has been around 5mins.
I think the new people who start racing are the only ones who will know it by something else.

I reckon it will end up being known as the masters. Or over 30's? The term masters is a bit confusing for some[me] Over 30's is descriptive but a bit long, it might work though.

Just think Jeff, 10yrs from now there will be over 30's with Beiber haircuts racing. Be thankful we wear helmets. Small mercies

The use of the term "masters" has always been interesting to me. Vets is somehow seen by some as being vey old and masters seems to be - not so old. And "master" has some implication of someone being in control and at the top of the game - but it does seem to be a male term to me in a sport that struggles to attract more women participants.
It seems like the next step of those 'guiding' the club will be to amalgamate with the wheelers so the nickname issue will resolve itself.

I am going off on a tangent here, possibly into outer space! Mention of "women participants" drives me to mention this facebook post today by a lady cyclist I know:-

"Rolled up beside a total dick passenger in his crappy car at a red light yesterday arvo with dan. D head says ... "where's your rego?". I say "where's your passenger rego?". D head says, "you should have to pay f king rego!. I said "whats your name shane". D head lost for words n winds his window up."

With wisdom like that, I might contact Belinda for nickname suggestions :D
