Car Pooling to northern road races.

Postby master6 » Tue Feb 07, 2012 4:58 pm

In my youth we engaged in car pooling to get to race events, due to cost, and the fact that many club members were under 18 years of age and did not have drivers licences.

There is a lot of racing in the north of Tasmania, and car pooling might well provide opportunities for more southern people to participate.

Some factors to consider might include:-

What type of vehicle do you have available?
How much leg room in the back seat? (comfort on way up/ leg cramps on way home)
Do you have a roof rack to carry bikes?
Do you have a towbar?
Do you have a trailer?
Do you have family or a partner to accompany you?
Would you want to do a one day trip, or stay overnight?
If you stay overnight, would you share a cabin etc?
Do you envisage sharing motoring costs?
Would you want to assist some of Hobarts junior riders?
Would you borrow a trailer?

There must be other considerations that I have not thought of. What comes to mind?

How do you share motoring costs?
We had a Ski boat for many years, and we were members of a Ski club that owned a boat. Almost everyone who came for a ski understood the cost of fuel, but many found it hard to believe that the fuel cost of running a boat was less than half the total cost. I don’t have figures for motor cars, however it is obvious that some costs such as registration and insurance are a fixed cost for the owner, regardless of how much the car is used.
Costs that should be considered are things like tyre wear and routine servicing, that are largely accumulated by use, and accrue during car pooling.
In the absence of any estimates of these costs, (no doubt they could be easily obtained, possible from RACT) it might be reasonable that fuel costs are shared between passengers only.

The trailer pictured here is being used this weekend on the East Coast Canter, can carry six bikes in a rack, and might be available.

Well organized car pooling, with every one involved knowing and fairly meeting pre agreed obligations could be of great assistance to many.

If you are one who reads these forums and does not speak, now is the time to register your interest, without any obligation, so that the potential can be assessed. Just come on here, and say “I might be interested in trying this."

Do you have a roof rack to carry bikes? Yes
Do you have a towbar? Yes
Do you have a trailer? No
Do you have family or a partner to accompany you? Yes
Would you want to do a one day trip, or stay overnight?
If you stay overnight, would you share a cabin etc? Pending the question if my partner comes to the race.

I will be racing up North throughout the season to various races as I did last year.

What type of vehicle do you have available? Holden Astra or Holden Barina (borrowed)
How much leg room in the back seat? (comfort on way up/ leg cramps on way home) Astra - Reasonable; Barina - Enough for climbers, tight for sprinters
Do you have a roof rack to carry bikes? No, towball rack for up to 3 bikes (but mutually exclusive with trailer)
Do you have a towbar? Yes - on Astra
Do you have a trailer? Yes, normal box trailer
Do you have family or a partner to accompany you? Possibly
Would you want to do a one day trip, or stay overnight? Day trip
If you stay overnight, would you share a cabin etc? N/A
Do you envisage sharing motoring costs? Yes
Would you want to assist some of Hobarts junior riders? Yes, but not Torben. He's mean to me :P .
Would you borrow a trailer? If it would help (6 bikes sounds smart but can only take 5 riders (a bit euro intimate -- i.e. squishy) in the car!)

Mmm.......I dont know whether to stick my nose into this one; I learned to swim at 30 , so I have a little empathy with Barry.

Ah, what the hell, is "Barry bashing" illegal?

Back to car pooling............there looks like there could be scope to do some. Hopefully this thread will prompt people who are interested to say gooday here. As they say, no good winking at a girl in the dark! Tell people that you just might be interested. There is no obligation to go beyond that. :D

Yes. I can give you a lift. We can stop for coffee in Campbell Town, before and after the race. Plan is to drive to Cressy, meet Phil Z, ride up to Longford for warm up. I take it you'll be riding A grade? :)

Hey Marc, going back to Cressy may not be the plan atm, Phil is away at Ottways and still working out logistics. Plan maybe riding in from Cressy then picked up from Campbelltown. So we arent giving you a lift...I still nheed to get bke racks.

OK, that's left me more confused than before. Are you updating me on what you are doing, what Phil is doing, or what?

So here's what I understand the story to be. At this stage, I am assuming that I will be driving my car, picking up Barry in Hobart, and the two of us driving to Cressy (where we may or may not meet Phil) then riding up to Longford for the race as warmup. After the race, Barry and I (and maybe Phil) will ride back to Cressy, hop back into my car, and cruise back to Hobart.

3. Aaron an Phil may come back with me at this stage, Phil will let me know later in the week.

4. Aaron hasnt given me a 100% guarantee he will be my domestique yet.

I'm not going to Longford although an ex-girlfriend lived in Cressy 40 years ago. I have a towball but no bike rack. If there is anything that I can help with for this weekend please feel free to ask me next week.

Good. The arrangements are now starting to make sense. I had a girl friend 40 years ago, lets say 45 years ago to avoid "problems". She ran off in a southerly direction, in search of more d irection. Did your girlfriend ever mention my name?

Yes, I need a lift. About 12 feet would be good. I'm doing some painting on my sons house, and cant reach the high part of the walls under the gable ends. A loan of some painters trestles would be appreciated.

Perhaps Barry, Mark, and Rob might come round and help with the sanding; looks like they have no chance of getting to Longford.
