I have just got back from a trip seeing family in Tassie,(melb cup week) and while i didn't have a bicycle nor the time to ride it, i found my self admiring what Tassie has to offer, and am planning to go back over bicycle in hand sometime next year.

So i can start planning what month/months are typically the best?

10 minutes ago or in about half an hour - sorry, couldn't resist :D

It used to be that Feb/March was the most stable time in that we would get slow moving high pressure systems sitting over the state. That seems to be less the case in recent years :( but I would certainly be aiming for the 2nd half of summer rather than earlier. You might have to book your trip and decide where to go depending on the forecast?

cheers, Andy

I didn't know there was months that were good in Tassie?

When I was there it was 5 mins here and 5 mins there.

But what it lacks in good weather it makes up by having great scenery. ( when you can see it) just kidding.

Relax ozzymac; You, me, and most mainlanders unfortunately dont know.
Dont know how magnificent Tasmania is. :D
Like you, I am/was a Queenslander.
Tasmania...............brrrrrr

I thought that, as Tasmania was south of Victoria, and Victoria can be *^%^%&, Tasmania must be part of Antartica.

Then, We took a trip here about 7 years ago. :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

The west coast is rather wet. The east coast is rather dry.

My wife and I laugh when it rains. Half of what is called "rain " here is in fact errant moisture incapable of keeping your windscreen wipers in intermitent mode. I often put my raincoat in my back pocket, but rarely stop to put it on.

We now spend about 9 months of each year here just east of Hobart.

Believe me, this is cycling paradise :D :D :D

Actually I do know how nice it is.

I lived on both sides, west coast and east coast, on 2 different times.

As you said the west coast is wet, a bit of an understatement.......

Loved it up around Burnie.....

It would be great to be able to live there for a few months each year.

Even though up here in country Queensland is pretty good.

Cheers

For those interested in seeing a lot of Tassie by bike in a week - join us on the Ronde - see the topic below for the February ride. There's a few similar rides going around at various times and most of them have a charity association along with them.

From my experience where the best weather occurs depends on what time of year, what part of Tassie and what your expectations are. January can be a bit blowy as we move away from the equinox. If you are planning a family barbecue you can generally guarantee the day before will always be glorious and the day everyone arrives it will probably rain. February is usually the best month for calm and warm weather but it can get very wet in the north east depending on whether high pressures get blocked into the Tasman. March is unpredictable. April's weather changes on a daily basis as the Low pressure systems try to work their way south. And May is classical autumn weather - often cold crisp clear mornings followed by clear still days and cooling off quickly in the evenings - or it might snow.

My suggestion would be to lower your weather expectations and make sure you have a very good lightweight jacket for any eventuality. Even when the weather is supposed to be a sparkling thirty degrees - always carry that jacket!
