I've got to admit that 1:45 to 2:45 made me cringe a little. The guy copped some criticism for it in the comments, but most people were ok with it. Just wondering what other "retro guys" think of this?

What do you think of this guy's technique?

A bit rough, but he did say he had no intention of reusing the Quill stem. Saves re-taping and refitting brifters but yes I would agree with you. Waste of a perfectly good quill stem.

Lord forgive them for they know not what they do! The guy's a cowboy, worried about galvanic corrosion but will take a dremel to a perfectly good stem because he might have to wrap the bars again! That stem is an aesthetic abomination on that bike whereas the quill is perfectly suited. Rarely do you see a 1 1/8" ahead stem ime that marries well with a traditional headset.

All good to me, it wasn't a fancy quill so would of ended up in the bin anyway. Saved him a lot of time. Agree that new stem looks crap with the angle, but they can look ok.

The ironic thing is that it appears his new stem puts the bars at almost *exactly* the same forward position as the original. Perhaps the new position is a few mm higher, but he easily had that adjustment already in the existing quill.Uncle Just wrote:That stem is an aesthetic abomination on that bike whereas the quill is perfectly suited. "RJ the bike guy" is as ham fisted as they come, but even by his standards that's nasty.
