Signwriters print on heavy coated stock. After they peel off the sign they are left with a heavy backing paper. The backing paper is what you need.
Cut it to A4 and print your design onto the side that is glossy and faced the adhesive side of the sign.
The design needs to be in reverse. Use Transparency setting to slow it down and use the manual sheet feed.
And it need to be a laser printer. Inkjets will not work.

Clean up some aluminium sheet (bought from model supply outlets), heat up the iron (much to the disgust of the regular user of the iron  ), I used no steam and on the wool setting.
Place the aluminium sheet onto a block of wood to insulate the sheet from the surface you are working on.
Heat up the aluminium sheet and then carefully place the printed decal printed side down onto the hot aluminium sheet.
Carefully place the hot iron onto the back of the decal and leave it for about a minute.
Then carefully lift the iron and use the tip of the iron to rub over the decal.
What you are doing is heating up the toner with the the iron so it releases from the backing paper and the toner adheres to the aluminium sheet.
When you think you are finished place the aluminum sheet in the freezer as that makes it easier for the backing paper to release from the transferred toner. Peter, my brother-in-law told me that trick.
Repeat until you are happy with the result. That is why I printed many copies onto each sheet.
I found my wife's nail polish remover ideal to remove the toner from not quite right efforts.
Cut out with a pair of tin snips, and clean up with a metal file.

if you have made your own printed circuit boards it is a piece of cake. I haven't, but my brother-in-law does (there is not much he doesn't do). I just watched youtube videos and read some web pages.
I could go the next steps and use the toner as a mask to etch the bare aluminium, then paint the etch area and sand so the masked area is now aluminium and the etched back is filled with paint. As it is I am happy with the result. And I do not consider that the badge is going to be subjected to much wear and tear. The toner has strongly bonded. And I thought it was a nice touch how I showed my wife how you can retask an iron and nail polish remover.
The 'new look' was taken from the 1948 newspaper adverts, cleaned up in Photoshop, and image traced in Illustrator.

I am happy.
Liz less so. The thought of riding it is not savoured.

The saddlebag was from Hein at theleatherbug.com and he is based in Brisbane. He sells off the website and from ebay. I asked if he could customise the bag to have it work with the saddle leather and leather handgrips. He was very accommodating, even ordering matching thread from England. I sent Hein a piece of the leather which he stitched on.

I also fitted the chain and took it for a test ride along the driveway. Just a few more things to do.
The jacaranda trees are in flower in the next street. If I get it finished it might be a nice background.

Great match and beautiful bags too. I have one of his bags on a 70s Speedwell Rover I have.

Yes. How durable is it?

Was thinking of just painting the brand onto my cranks, but if the toner is more durable, then it may be better. Or I could try to etch the logo in.

I wouldn't anticipate it would withstand the wear expected at the cranks. In that situation I would be getting a cut vinyl sticker and using that as a mask for etching then fill with paint. With a test run on a 'sacrificial' set.

thanks Robert. I tried for a complementary setting. As I was riding around the suburb looking for locations I saw friends; 2 were gardening, two were putting up their christmas lights. And I found and herded back two escaped dogs.
More chatting than taking photos. It seems it is not the bike to go for Strava times.

This is one of the most detailed and impressive bicycle restorations I have ever read about. Congratulations! Even if it doesn't get ridden much, it would be worthwhile owning just to look at.

Luke,
Andrew set the bar very high with his Ted Easton restoration and his Peugeot Mixte.
I was inspired by the care and thoughtfulness that went into those builds.

Liz suggested I take it out to the nature strip and photograph it with our house in the background.
She didn't say to bring it back in.

Wow, that is just stunning.
I love the scroll pattern / lining and the curly fender stays.
You should be super proud of that bike. Much too nice for the garage - straight to the pool room!

Liz is faster than me, and she would be running ahead of me, urging the kid to ride faster!
She has spoken of getting others to ride the bike; cycling friends, son's girlfriend, so a thieving kid is not too far to stretch that line of thought.

It should be put on display in an art gallery. Bikes as a work of art are seriously overlooked!

bar end plugs:
cheap, easily available
not so fast. The handlebars I have used have a smaller internal diameter than the current standard.
Image
get a suitably sized piece of copper, punch a hole in it. Hammer in a stainless steel countersunk flat head socket screw, grind flat, polish.
A piece of rubber fuel line trimmed to size is placed on the shaft of the screw and retained with a washer and a nut.

When the screw is tightened, the rubber will compress to fill the internal diameter of the handlebar.
I just need to get to Coventry Fasteners to get longer screws.
I will do then do the final polish and then install.

Same concept as the Velox plugs, or the old yellow Cateye pictured, or plenty of the modern ones.
Realisation with the suggestion of my brother-in-law.
The use of copper repeats the copper rivets I used on the saddle. The stainless steel repeats the use of chrome and stainless elsewhere on the bike.

Well there were no suggestions. So it came back to me.
I found the accessory I bought long ago.
So more work.
the materials I collected today; not many would guess from this.

the sheet of stainless steel is to make my own strap to go around the handlebars, the one shown is a little too big.

It is NOT a Coronation; it is a New Look

This is absolutely beautiful!

Great attention to detail. I'm hoping to pick up one in the future to restore and this has fuelled my desire and provided great inspiration.
