The Sydney Tweed Ride (Not to tweed heads)

Postby hartleymartin » Thu Mar 12, 2009 7:36 am

G'day!

I stumbled across this website:

http://sydney.tweedrun.info/Home

Time to raid your local op-shop and polish up that golden oldie you have waiting for a special occasion!

(Edit: The event has been re-named the "Sydney Tweed Ride")

That sounds so cool. I'll have to try to steam punk my bike. Interestingly, I do have some skills at walking cane fighting which should come in handy if some ne'er-do-well decides to scadaddle with my velocipede.

I'll put it in my diary and start looking for trouser clips.

Don't forget the crochet-backed cycle mitts.

Or maybe even full leather mitts with a press-stud closure

Helmets must be worn
Ohhh :( Can't they get a special dispensation for a heritage ride :? ?

I doubt that they could get permission to ride without helmets. I am pretty sure that certain rural gala parades run un-insured risks with some vintage motor-cyclists riding without helmets (often in a beanie or a tweed cap I might add!). Now to raid to op shops for vintage tweed... Plus 4's anyone?

i asked the missus if we could go to Sydney in June so we could dress up in tweed and ride around on rusty old bikes, which i thought would be quite ok but she just said that was the stupidest thing i have ever said, surely not!

i've got a brown op shop suit 2 sizes to small for me, an argyle knitted vest, trouser clips & a vintage bicycle anyone wanna sponsor me?

Where are you coming from?

*EDIT*

Stupid me, should have read the bit under your avatar.

Now by sponsor, do you mean give you a place to camp out for the weekend or pay for your passage over here?

A very cool cap to wear for the Tweed Run. Waterproof, breathable and fits under a helmet too. 8)

Question: wouldn't a laced Brooks Professional do your nether region (thinking inside of thighs) no good whatsover. Looks painful.

From the Tweed Cycling Club
Discerning cyclists recognise that bicycle technology reached its pinnacle in the early 1970s and everything since has just been marketing. Millions are spent every year on hoodwinking the public with obscure materials which are all very well if you are constructing a craft to convey astronauts to the Moon, but quite out of place on an English country lane. Lugged steel, by contrast, is durable, comfortable and offers an opportunity for the skilled framebuilder to practice his craft. Why spend a king's ransom on the latest titanium confection when any weight advantage will be rendered irrelevant by a cheese-and-pickle sandwich and a thermos of soup?
Love it :P

Drat! Just getting a check on price and freight for those gloves and went one stage too far. So now I'm awaiting the arrival of five pairs of leather stud-fastened gloves

Should anyone want a pair or two for that retro look (size M) then just PM me  . We can work out a price.

BUMP,One Month 2 Go: The Sydney Tweed Run

Postby stackyard59 » Fri May 08, 2009 3:30 pm

Image
The inaugural Sydney Tweed Run will be held on Sunday 7th June, 2009 (the Sunday
of the Queen's Birthday long weekend, even though it isn't really her birthday
and we never voted for her.)

A leisurely ride in Sydney visiting sites including NSW Art Gallery and Lady
Macquarie's Chair, St Mary's and St Andrews cathedrals, Hyde Park, Parliament
House, State Library, Opera House, Quay, Queen Victoria Building (of course) and
Town Hall etc. The exact route will be posted up closer to the event day.

We want to show cycling can be stylish and what better way than dressing up in
Tweed for the day and having a leisurely ride. You must be wearing appropriate
Tweed clothing for ride (sorry no lycra, jeans or regular clothes). For
inspiration we suggest you look at the London Tweed Run photos of which can be
found here http://www.flickr.com/photos/roxysreal/ ... 934832373/ or
take a look at the Tweed Cycle Club http://www.tweed.cc/

Helmets must be worn when riding but can be removed and replaced by caps, berets
and other suitable headgear for photos.

Older, slower bicycles made of steel, not plastic, are encouraged, but not
essential.

Gentleman participants may wish to grow some suitable facial hair for the event
eg a moustache and some nice bushy mutton chop sideburns (sufficient notice will
be required for this). Ladies should not forget their lipstick.

We will be stopping during the ride to refresh ourselves with cups of tea/coffee
so we suggest bringing a picnic blanket and supplies of cakes, scones and
cucumber sandwiches.

Prizes will be awarded

- Best dressed male
- Best dressed female
- Best dressed child (under 12 years of age)

For suitable attire we suggest you try

your local Charity shops

This event will continue to be updated with the exact route and other
information as it gets closer to the event time.

More information can be found on the http://www.sydneycyclist.com website, more

Drat, too far for me to go to Sydney for the weekend, so I'm going to do my own version tomorrow

Tweed Run la Merri

I'll have the retro gear on to ride my Victoria roadster, commencing from FIDO outside Farfield station (Melb) at 9.45am. It's an MBTC ride.

Bloody heck! You live in Fairfield (Melbourne)? I live in Fairfield (Sydney)! Well, at least when you come to explore the cycling network here with me, you can easily remember which suburb you have to return to. I believe there is also a Fairfield in Brisbane.

Did my own ride in Tweed today. From home via train to East Camberwell, the Anniversary Trail to Fairfield, then after coffee, up the Darebin Shared Trail to the Northern Ring Rd Trail. Lunch stop was at Greensborough then on down the Plenty River Trail and Yarra Trail to Burke Rd followed by backstreets back to East Camberwell station. Riding with about 20 fellow club members with at least 5-6 on Surly LHTs, and a surprisingly large number of bikes equipped with dual-leg kickstands 8)

The tweed jacket was very comfortable on this cool day, letting some air through sufficient to prevent overheating. A shame with the helmet law I could only wear the tweed flat hat at coffee and lunch. A large number of my fellow riders pointed out that I needed a bow-tie (I prefer a cravat personally) and that the moleskins should be proper trousers with black leather shoes. Ahhh, more gear to aquire

Oh, and stackyard59, the bike matters too. Mine was a good deal older than the clothing and evoked much more discussion :D

For those who planned to take public transport into the city this weekend please be advised of the following:

Changes to train services are:

Suburban Lines:
North Shore Line - Buses replace all services)
Western Line - Trains operate to Central only - change trains to get to Town Hall or ride up George Street - it's usually fairly quiet at that time on Sunday mornings)
Northern Line - Buses replace trains between Hornsby and Strathfield

Regional/Inter-city Lines:
Blue Mountains Line - Buses replace trains between Lithgow and Mt Victoria
Hunter Line - Buses replace trains between Scone and Newcastle
