Good to know that Australia isn't so deficient amongst most OECD countries. ;)

Japan, I think. All of the parts on my Miyata, Centurion and Nishiki seem to be made in Japan. They don't have original tyres, however, so I'm not sure about that.

I think IRC and Panaracer still make some tyres in Japan.

The obvious place to start would be the frame tubes and lugs, followed by wheels. I had even wondered if it would be possible to make leather saddles under license from Brooks and resurrect the Bell Saddle label. What patriotic Aussie wouldn't want to have one of these of their bicycle?

Why would you need a license from Brooks to do this? Leather saddles are pretty simple. Leather and steel are fairly available as raw materials in Australia.

I'd buy one. Is it just me or is that kangaroo a bit too muscular?

Yeah true, we only have eastern greys around here although some of the old males can be a bit intimidating. Do you reckon we could get more off topic?

Haven't seen that design before, but there are old ones where the pedals where a little further up the forks and there was a cog/chain design (on both sides) that worked in principal how a fixie works today, except it was powering the front wheel of course.

from Powerhouse Museum site description of a similar machine...

The Facile bicycle was termed a dwarf safety bicycle when it was made but its appearance is more like a dwarf ordinary or penny farthing with a larger front wheel of only 36 inches in diameter, which has a perished tyre, and a small rear wheel of 22 inches, with a replaced white rubber tyre. With the dwarf style, the front wheel is not as large as the ordinary bicycle, the saddle is placed further back than the ordinary and the pedals are lowered by pivoting them on the ends of levers which are mounted below the front wheel hub. These levers pivot at the front ends to lower the extensions of the front forks. The mid points are connected to cranks by short articulated links. The foot action follows an oval instead of a circle. end quote..

The Facile in the pictures has been restored by a well known Melbourne collector.
I have ridden a lever driven machine and they are not easy to ride.

Tyres & tubes were made here by both Dunlop & Olympic along with Fizackerly [Fiz Tyres] Barnett Glass, Perdreau & others
Rims were made here by Dunlop, & wood rims [for racing] were made by Rex Leahy in Sydney under the "Rex rims" brand. There were others of course.
Frame tubes by ATM [Australian Tube Mills]
Saddles by many manufacturers, of whom Bell seem to be the best known these days.
Paint for frames was made by all the major paint manufacturers.
Velox [VEW] made not only hubs & brakes, but also three different stems [goosenecks?]
Brakes were also made by a number of other manufacturers including the Gem 'V' brake.
Handlebars were also made by a number of manufacturers, right down to the individual bike shops. I have two "Carbine" bars that were unique to the Carbine bike, but they were far from being alone in regards to local manufacture.
Waterslide & Gold size decals were cranked out in their millions here in Australia.

I do not believe that spokes were ever made here.
I have not yet identified any Aussie made sprockets, chains or bottom bracket parts, but don't rule them out.
Cranks & chainwheels are also a gray area as I have not yet clearly identified any Aussie made ones, but I strongly believe that even these were made here also.

Track chain rings are still made in Australia. I think it's in Sydney, but for the life of me, I can't find the web site

How cool is that! Now I know where I'm going to get chainrings for the Sugino cranks on the elan next year

Heh heh. Although tt's hard to be a hipster when you've got mudguards on your bike. I'm getting no love from the dreadlock crowd down at the Fishbowl.

I'm stuffed if I know what will fit the damn thing though - the originals are "Brev. Campagnolo" but the cranks are Sugino. Does anybody know whether Sugino made Campy compatible cranks or is the bike some kind of abomination?

It's great adding something to an old topic, has anybody seen this list of old Aust bicycle parts makers before?

http://members.westnet.com.au/rjharrop/ ... info~1.htm

I've downloaded it locally in case it disappears.
