Skidstar Therapy
Postby stackyard59 » Sat May 16, 2009 5:42 pm
Is your Skidstar feeling banished and lonely at the back of the shed cause it’s different? Has it’s Altenberger’s turned to hamburger? Has it’s power brakes got the reliability of the Sydney grid? Fear not! We here at The 2nd Annual Canberra Vintage & Classic Bicycle Ride have planned a large group therapy session for all those Skidstars in need of their cousins. Come join us on the 20th Sept, and let those Skidstars receive the attention they deserve.

If you ever find a couple - even just a frame I'll take it. In fact I am really only after the frame, as I want to make something of a beach cruiser out of it.brauluver wrote:And you will have to join the Q behind mehartleymartin wrote:Got a Skidstar GT you don't want any more? Thanks for the invitation stackyard59, my Skidstar needs more nourishment on it's bare frame......stackyard59 wrote: Is your Skidstar feeling banished and lonely at the back of the shed cause it’s different? The wish list:
1. chrome chain guard
2. checker seat
3. double light set with speedo......tell me I'm dreaming
4. reasonably priced decal set
Will I find these parts in Canberra if I make the trip from Melbourne??
PS I rebuilt this bike from a bare frame and forks. The quest to complete the bike started "only" 8 years ago.
So there is hope for others who seek a similar result.
cheers

OT here, but you do realise that eBay customer service is no more responsible for disputes between you and a buyer/seller than the Editor of the local paper would be if you bought something out of the classifieds?hartleymartin wrote:I don't deal with Ebay any more because of problems I have had with their customer service. I got unpaid item strikes from having had my account hacked into and someone putting on bids that were not from me, and then trying to sell other stuff in my account. Trying to get the mess sorted out just made me stressed and mad over and over again, so I refuse to have anything to do with ebay these days. The closest I'll come is getting someone else to buy something for me, and paying them cash in hand for it. I personally will not deal with ebay.lemmiwinks wrote:OT here, but you do realise that eBay customer service is no more responsible for disputes between you and a buyer/seller than the Editor of the local paper would be if you bought something out of the classifieds?hartleymartin wrote:I don't deal with Ebay any more because of problems I have had with their customer service. Still in the market for a Skidstar GT, even if it is only frame and forks!

Was it someone you knew?? Struggling to see someone hacking into random ebay accounts. Security of your account details are your responsibility, not that of Ebay. Whilst your case may be genuine, plenty of others who have genuine unpaid strikes will most likely try to use the same 'excuse' every day. How are they supposed to tell who is and isnt genuine?? Ebay is one of the main reasons IMO collecting and restoring old bikes has become a lot more popular and accessible as it is an accessible marketplace.hartleymartin wrote:I got unpaid item strikes from having had my account hacked into and someone putting on bids that were not from me, and then trying to sell other stuff in my account. He is based in Lidcombe.Costs for GTS/GT Skidstar kits are approx $75.00
Other skidstar parts sources include:
Universe cycles in Parramatta,They have complete NOS bikes as well as parts including Shimano 333 Power brakes, guards and such. They are closing up very shortly.(Nice guys and actually SJH relatives) but make sure you have a very large bank account !!
Teddybear66 on ebay has Skidstar parts that come up now and then.
The most success ive had is just plain advertising in local papers ,community billboards in shopping centres and such.Recently I picked up a GTS frame(No, not for sale),and a very nice cherry red Fireball Chopper this way !

Another Gt, bloody brilliant. The seat looks in great condition !! They are very hard things to find, so your doing well. The rear wheel is a Sturmey Archer Drum Brake/Dyno? Ist thing i would change if mine would be the chain guard. (As you may know)the original shape jobs come in white and can be found on the roadster models.Chromework costs are skyhigh,so for a temp fix i just chrome paint them !! We went down and cruised Melbourne cbd and local area bike shops (CV&CBR Poster Distribution) last week with three Skidstars. We had a ball (although a tad cold)and got the bikes out in the public eye causing good interest. Any others in your group/area got em?

The three in one sounds an interesting item indeed. Any chance of a photo or two? GTS Speedwells also had two double headlight options. One was the same body as the GT( same manufacturer i'd imagine!) but had no speedo fitted. It had orange indicators fitted on the sides.I have only ever seen one example ! I retro fitted it to a GT at the Museum here a few years back.Sure would like to find another. The other was the double bodied red lipped dragstar type.
The 69 GTS pictured below came in repainted and restickered. It's an original five speed thats also been retro fitted with Altenburger brakes.I just havn't got around to repainting it as yet, hopefully soon.I have the seat, 333 power brake setup,Five speed shifter(Dragstar wooden ball type) 27 x 1 1/4 white wall tyres ready for it when i finally get it together.
