Malvern Star Bottom Bracket Help

Postby poli84 » Sat Jul 11, 2009 6:19 pm

Hey guys,
I'm in the middle of restoring my dad's old Malvern Star 10 speed and have run into some trouble sourcing a bottom bracket.

When stripping the bike back, I didn't realise that Malvern Star bottom brackets were very specific and you can't just put a new BB in.
Because it was in terrible condition, i stupidly through out the BB and am now chasing a new one.

My problem is, I do not know enough info about the bike to begin my search.

I was hoping i could post a pic of the bike and a Malvern Star expert out there could tell me the year and model and perhaps even point me in the right direction of where to source this BB from.

Your help is really appreciated!

Hey mate,
Nah i'm in Melbourne but would be happy to pay postage?
How much would you be looking to sell it for?

Is it off a similar bike?

Just to clarify, is it the same as the BB in this link?

viewtopic.php?f=23&t=15586

If it is, sorry I've already given mine away.

Hey LG,

No it's different as the one I need is threaded.

Thanks anyway though.

Sounds unusual. If it's threaded, it should be English/ISO.

Oooh! I spy a lady's 3-speed in the background. Do you mind posting a picture of that up somewhere? At a glance looks like 26" x 1-3/8" wheels and a 20" frame. Pressed metal mudguard stays tell me that its of decent quality too! It's not an Apollo by any chance?

only problem is one of the cups is still on the frame, cant seem to get if off. Thus was basically offering the frame to you, not really worth posting the whole frame just for the bottom bracket. Ill take some pics, and see if i can get the sucker off.

Well one of the cups is still attached as I did not get it off.

Of the two cups (on the sides), one has one "notch" and the other has 3.

Does that sounds familiar with yours?
I have the one with one notch still on the bike.

Hey there,

Yes it is a ladies 3 speed in the background with an internal gear in the rear hub.

It is a Repco.

I don't have any more pictures of it in it's original state but I did do a full resto on it for my girlfriend but left off the changer as it was in pretty bad shape.
Basically it's running as a single speed now.

It belonged to her grandmother.
Excuse the silver on the tyres. That is no longer there as the tyres have been replaced.

If you can't get the drive side BB cup off, remember that it is reverse threaded. Another trick is to put a bolt which fits reasonably neatly through the spindle hole in the fixed cup and install the nut on the outside. Tighten the nut against the fixed cup, then continue putting pressure on the nut in the tightening direction which MAY work the fixed cup loose. A lot of pressure will likely be required. Once off, any standard british thread bottom bracket should fit.

Or altenately, take the bike to your LBS and they'll remove the cup for you.

Both bikes are looking very good. Testament to the reliability of 3-speed hubs, shifters usually fail before the hub ever needs any mechanical care.

Just wanted to say a big thanks to Jaseyjase who had the Malvern Star Bottom Bracket that I have been searching for and was kind enough to clean it up and post it to me, hence getting my Malvern Star resto project, back on track.

The generosity and assistance to a new member is thoroughly appreciated.

Will post some pics of the bike once she is complete.

I have spent the last 2 nights trying to get one of these "one-notch monstrosities" out of an old Ricardo Frame. I have no use for it and would be happy to pass it on to you once I get it out however....

- Unlike the photo above, the axle isn't threaded. Mine are cottered cranks (you can have those too if you wish - 165mm long)
- The seals are rooted
- No ball bearings
- the notch in the drive side outer ring is slightly elongated. I thought it screwed out.

Let me know.

I have one but it is not the best. I really wouldn't bother with it unless you are desperate. The thread in the sleeve seems to be fouled - perhaps not in a major way - and I somewhat butchered the slot when I drove it off with a chisel (last resort). But it is complete and still has its seals and spindle. I had a couple of Superstars and I took the best of both bikes - this was the left over.

What city are you in ? If Melbourne, Bicycle Recycle is bound to have them. Old MS 10 speeds go cheap on eBay too. It might be worth your while to pick one up for salvage and score other useful bits in the process. But asking around the LBS's would still be the most likely prospect of finding one.

Also, Pony Bikes (also in Melbourne) reported on their blog that they had a sleeve manufactured and pinned to the frame of an old MS by Grip Sport that allows a cartridge type BB to be run in the old frame....

Ive got one of these on my current build up.... How does everyone affix the cranks to the axle? ive got a couple of big nuts that fit over the thread but obviously tightening them is near impossible wit the recessed hole in the crank.... thoughts?
