Oztion! I'd forgotten about them. Well, the 'net's a bit more complex and matured since then, maybe. I'd be happy to give business to an alternative if it got up and running and reached some sort of sustainable size. Using gumtree is fleabay1 to stripped-down fleabay2. Having said that I've made a coupe of good purchases on it. :|
Well, no, it's not a pushbike, otherwise I'd be pushing it...

I remember when stuff.com.au and sold.com.au were the two big auction sites, before ebay went local. I'm talking late '90s.

Stuff struggled to make critical mass... there just wasn't enough listings to make it worth most people's effort to look there. I can't remember whether it faded away before or after EvilBay arrived and superceded everything in its path.

There are other auction or classified sites now, as there have been all along. Gumtree is the only one that has shown any sign of reaching critical mass. The others... nobody lists there because nobody shops there, and nobody shops there because there's nothing listed there.

Ebay is squeezing us to see how rude a fee it can get away with, without ruining the monopoly. If any newcomer starts to make some headway, I reckon eBay will drop prices to squeeze them out. Until then... we're a cash cow.

Wouldnt it be great if this website had its own auction section that counted down to a set finish time...basically copy evilbay, charge a token amount and away we go..
When in doubt......mumble.

I sold a bike on ebay a month or so ago and must say the fees at the end of the month really surprised me. I did try to sell the bike first on gumtree (with a link in the 'bikes elsewhere' forum here) without success. The auction site does reach a reasonable audience and my item did sell for more on ebay than I listed it on gumtree, but I still feel ripped off by the fees and in the end received less than I would have received from my gumtree listing. With the current fees, as a seller, ebay is my option of last resort to be avoided wherever possible.

The fees on gumtree are another bugbear of mine now as well. No way I'm paying to bump my listing to the top, just copy and paste and start again.

An interesting listing on our local gumtree http://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/hobart-r ... 1024678795" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

You'd think if he was gonna ask those dollars for something that would've retailed <$500 he would have at least added some lens flare

 Are they still falling for it over there? It's about 1cm. too big, and about 250 dolares over, for me. Very nice bicycle, though. A promo prize, unridden? No doubt.

Yep, they love it over there, good laugh can be had from the new Foster's ads they had on their TV, actually, some of them were just plain stupid... The missus' family over there couldn't believe that we don't have any over here....

Nice bike though, I agree, about $250 over what I would pay for it...

i think it's priced alright. good paint, decent condition groupset. good wheels and tyres, cinelli cockpit, concor saddle..
peel off those stickers and replace with gefsco decals and you've got a lovely bicycle.
you couldn't build one for $500. at $400 this would be a bargain!

I'd do some searching through the archives before I got rid of the Fosters decals.
Around the late 80's Fosters did sponsor some riders here. I remember Gary Niewand being one of them.
I think it is more likely to be someone's old training bike than a a prize or promo bike.
If it was for promo, they would have used a stock frame like a Ricardo or similar.
Most likely the shop just doesn't want the hassle of naming the original owner.
