eBay prices on the rise, good time to sell old junk?

Postby cray- » Mon Sep 21, 2009 1:24 pm

Noticed a lot of what appear to be roadside collection quality stuff going for $150+ over the past few weeks. Are we experiencing another fixie surge in preparation for summer? Here's an example of what I'm talking about: $169 for an unidentified frame after 15 bids with 3 days remaining. Am I missing something or is this some diamond in the rough.

If not, now might be a good time to have that garage clean-up and sell off a few things.

I regularly see new, and sometimes even second hand stuff, going for higher prices than you can buy from Wiggle.

It's steel, has DA and 700C wheels. Good combination for a cheaper recreational/fitness bike. Reasonable quality steel frames aren't cheap new so it makes these a worthwhile buy.
If you have any similar bikes you should get a similar price. I spent a similar amount on a Clamont with 105 and 700C wheels. The bike is in my signature with the only originals being the frame, fork and headset.

This particular bike is fitted with mid 1970's top-end parts. It has a set of black Dura Ace 1st gen brakes on it, which are very nice. Not particularly valuable, but this is an interesting old bike.

Shame it is about 6" too short for me!

It should fetch at least $300 imho

Cheers

IMO that seems like a bargain, I'm assuming the frame is probably high end if it has dura-ace on it.

Then again, there's something like this.

Is there something I've missed? Could you not build it up from practically NOS parts to match for less money?

Oh... This one has made my day. The bike is not junk, but no way is it worth that much. It's worth around 1/10th of his starting bid.

Having said that, astute observervers will notice that the rear hub of that bike is quite rare and indeed collectible. It's a Record cassette hub with a 7-speed cassette. Most cassettes were 8-speed, and if you used 7-speed, you used an older screw-on cluster. I have never seen one of those cassettes in the flesh. Dates from 1989. That part might be worth a $300-$400 to a collector, but the rest of the bike looks like Athena to me, so hardly rare or valuable.

Hhhrrmm so I guess that was a bad example. My original point still stands, seems like less bargains around. Meh, nevermind.

Prepare to have your day made, again! The Peugeot is back, at a mere $1500 start this time. Still 4-5 times what its worth.

Back to OP...I agree, bargains are few and far between. No way would I be able to buy my steel 501SL frame with complete Shimano 600 group for $67 now.

I would consider a Apollo Eclipse for $305 excessive.

It does seem that collectable cycles has become the next ebay money spinner for the great unwashed. It's good and bad.
I have a few old clunkers that were just back pedal break roadsters that are now single speed fixies WOW that will maybe make me a few more dollars too even if the real bargains are getting harder to find. I think overall it's good for cycling in general that the value of S/H bikes increases with the sports rise in popularity.

I just parted with an old steel frame, an indi 300, for the grand sum of $2 on ebay. It is going to become a fixie. I didn't cover costs but i'll think of it as a community service.

eek... no. I described it as it was - rusty srcatches and needing a full restoration. Who'd buy a colnago fake anyway.

It ended up selling for $576 (i was predicting around that mark)

I was unfortunately the 2nd highest bidder. If you could find me something similar for a less price (and the right size 54-55cm), i would even give you a finders fee.

This Listing amused me greatly. Not because its an old clunker going for a bomb (its not), but the title just does it for me
