I wonder if they looked at the condition of that Super Elliot frame before bidding? $255 and it will have to have 2 tubes and a new steerer? ok if you can do it yourself I guess

I actually saw that bike in person last week at Redfern station. Some guy was wheeling it around, and had a whole bunch of parts(mudguards, tyres) with him, so I had thought he was rebuilding it as a commuter or something. But I guess its ended up on eBay.

Because it would look lovely on the wall as an unused companion to this...

Not sure if it counts as restored if all you did was put some cheap coloured wheels and new cables on it.

No offence intended to amputee cyclists out there, but this seems to be missing the left crank.

Talking about strange chainring arrangements, once on my old beater I wore the inner chainring down until it looked like little thin curved "shark teeth".

I didn't notice it until one day on a long ride when it literally wouldn't grip anymore. As soon as I applied significant pressure the chain would just rise up and jump teeth. I had a long trip home with lots of hills, so I did a quick roadside repair and turned the worn chainring around so it was on backwards (the wear was very asymmetrical). Amazingly it worked perfectly like that, so good in fact that I ran it for about another 3000 km before eventually getting around to replacing it. Ar, the joys of riding an old "beater".

Speaking of worn teeth on chainwheels, I must admit that I have never thought of turning the chainwheel around. But in the days before derailleurs, when coaster brakes and fixed wheels ruled, and dollars were scarce, people would wear the drivetrain out to a remarkable degree. I have seen a chainwheel worn down to such an extent that it looked like someone had attacked the teeth with an angle grinder or milling machine. Hardly any teeth left, but the bike was still rideable, with the chain adjusted fairly tight. Noisy, crunchy even, but rideable. Same with rear cogs in the old days, just a series of hooks remaining, but still doing the job.
3/16" x 1" cogs and chains lasted a long time. As chains became narrower and narrower, the cogs, understandably, wore out faster and faster.

i noticed the missing crank, but only after you mentioned the chainring arrangement, the biopace sticker on the big ring being partially obscured gives it away a bit.

All right - who's thinning their collection in Brisvegas?

I think this seems closer to WW1 vintage than WW2. Looks a rare beastie. Sad too small for me.
