Ok nice enough looking frame but home in on the picture of the derailleur and r/h rear dropout! WT? is going on here!
Mercian would never let anything like that out of the shop so even with the wrap around seat stay top this looks a bit dodgy...
Cheers
Richard

Just picked this frame and got a bit of history. The sellers brother raced it in the Dart and he is sure its a Mercian. The brother made some mods to bring it into the 1990's and these included the installation of shifter bosses and under tube cable guides. The rear derailleur had been involved in a bump so he decided to add a bit of metal to strengthen. He also painted the frame after the mods (rough). When I get it home this afternoon I'll get a better look at it, meanwhile back to it......

Wow.

I would have noticed the suicide brake levers, passed judgement on the whole bike, and moved on. Without noticing the 600 group.

What is with the levers? I always thought they were a surefire indicator of low-end bike-boom rubbish.

At the time they were probably seen as useful. People have always had more money than sense. Paying extra to have them fitted might have been an optio :) kinda like turning your drop bars upside down?

I have seen a few sets of Shimano 600 suicide levers during my scrounging.

The Sebring doesn't have a full groupset. Its missing the Jewel in the crown, the sweet Arabesque crankset.

Oh well, that's all good then - nice price! Needs a bit of tidying up tho'.
Try looking here http://www.merciancycles.co.uk/history where they have a few catalogs so you can try and see what you have there. If there is a frame number Mercian will identify it exactly for a small fee. You can get replacement transfers from Nick in the UK at http://www.hlloydcycles.com/ but he will want a frame number.

Thanks Richard. I bought the frame for the parts so I will more than likely pass it on. Still haven't got it out of the truck:/

I love the Campagnolo racing dropouts. A very rare thing on older steel race frames.

My sizing, reasonable start price, but alas not even in the ball park location wise; Big Hillman

Maybe the "Champion of the World 1985" stickers with the colours might be available on these and other frames - but I also notice a strong similarity with the tricolor chevrons either end of the "Hillman" downtube text with the same on Kenevans from a similar period. Did some Hillmans have any Ken Evans provenance or similar or just a kwinky-dink? I've heard it said the Kenevans contemporary livery was a pretty obv. rip off of Tommasini

Cheap Fuji Royale
http://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/chittawa ... 1023844644

Fake? Colnago. Maybe some Ricardo. At least it isnt overly expensive. For a clean 600 tricolor groupset its not a bad price.

That will teach me not to read the spiel :)

Unusual that the builder had the dropouts as they disappeared from the catalogs in the early 70's.

I never understood why they were only popular with cyclo tourists, particularly the French. They do make for easier rear wheel removal, particularly if you want to run mud guards.

Interestin'. They are too similar to not have been purposeful. What a beautiful bike too. Bikes like this make me really regret selling my road bike. What would really finish it off is a better quill stem, and that Rolls saddle I've been hanging onto.
