Further searching shows the advert for the 1937 Malvern Star 'Coronation'
it was, despite the advertising copy, not any significant change on other Malvern Stars of the time.
there was an extensive advertising campaign in 1937 to promote this release
advertisement in the SMH 24 April 1937

so it seems there were two versions of the 'Coronation', the 1937 and the 1953.
The 1937 version was to celebrate the coronation and the racing of Oppy and in the Coronation International Six-day race at Wembley

Greetings.
I'm new to your forum, and new to the world of bicycles.
I'm doing some research on two Malvern Star bikes I own.
One is a Skidstar, and the other a Coronation.
I've just been looking at the Coronation, which has a seatpost serial number of 1P2 * * *.
Does that make it a 1951 Perth-made model ?
The previous owner had the frame powder-coated orange, and the mudguards black.
Can powder-coating be removed without too much hassle ? What is the best way to prepare a frame and paint a bike ?
One of the thin cross tubes has seperated from the seatpost tube. I believe this is a common problem.
It has had an amatuerish repair, prior to being painted. Can I get this repaired to look as good as new ?
Lots of questions, and I may find answers when I search the forum, but I'm just writing them down as they occur to me.
Any advice will be appreciated.
Regards,
Nick.

Nick, welcome to the forum.
You are correct with the year and place of manufacture.
As it is a 1951 build, it predates Queen Elizabeth's coronation (1953).
It would have been marketed as a 'Streamlyne'.
For more information, and suggestions on who is best to repair, you would need to give us your location.
And photos are helpful, particularly of the section needing repair.

Welcome Nick, can't say I know about removing powdercoat. A frame repair should be easy if you find someone you trust to braze. Seeing your post makes me think about the restoration on my old coronation. You should find plenty of advice searching the forum and talking to folks here.

Owen, it is time for action.
You said you were going to paint yours years ago. I have finished mine, so now waiting for others to do theirs.
I know of four at one persons home in Wollongong, safely stored, but not out and being ridden.

powder coating is a mongrel thing to remove. just doesnt want to leave the metal.
easiest way is to rust the metal away from under the powder coating
sorry. I often have to repair pool fences and sanding back the powder coating is an evil task. also the fumes/smoke after welding as it get right into the pores of the meatl

Hahaha! I have been putting it off and your perfect job did make me feel ashamed of my efforts. I think some of the chroming I had done is rusty again :-)

Owen, found it, the paint can explosion was in August 2012.

Nick, It seems that a paint stripper with Methylene Chloride as the active ingredient does the job. I used plenty in striping the paint off all the internal woodwork when I was restoring our 1920's bungalow.
I would suggest talking to a power coater for advice. And remember if you use that, follow all of the safety instructions. It is strong stuff.
I would avoid dipping it into a bath. Using a gel based stripper would give you control to avoid getting it into the tubes.

Thank you all for your greetings and advice.
I wondered about calling it a Coronation, when it pre-dated the actual coronation, but could only find the names Coronation and Elizabethan for that shape, until now.
Stripping the powder coat sounds like more trouble than it's worth, so think I will probably sell it, and concentrate on the Skidstar.
I'm currently in Albany, WA, but get up to Perth, now and then.
Regards.

I suggest you get some advice from a powder coater as to ways of removing it. They should know.
Paint stripper isn't an issue, providing you are sensible with it.
if you go to Perth, have a talk to Cameron Smith and more
I can supply a series of images used by the painter for the lining and feathers for this repaint.

Thanks, Clydesdale, but will probably offload the Streamlyne/Coronation.
Can anyone assist with some idea of value for one that has an orange frame, black guards, original-looking wheels / handlebars / pedals, non-original seat, and a missing chainguard ?
I checked-out the info regarding Cameron Smith. Very nice.

I "think" you can powder coat over powder coat if that makes sense however with a nice frame I would understand why you would want to paint it. There is a place in Dandenong Victoria called metalstrip, They can strip anything by dipping it in some solution. I have used them for stuff that bead blasting would be too severe on. ( I know they may not be in your vicinity but they may know someone close to you.)

Hi All
Picked up a Coronation from Yoeval (Central west NSW) on the weekend, from what I can see and will confirm when stripping back hand done paint job is 3M 2891. I have no idea how to convert this to an age. Pics on my pinterest soon.

1953 Melbourne built.
Keen to see your photos, and what do you plan for it?

3M 2891 would make it 1943, not 1953. A '5' before the 3 may be revealed on closer inspection?

The earliest ladies 'Coronation' number I have seen has a 6M prefix.

Apart from an apparently homemade, rough as guts, gents version, (or conversion), with a 2M prefix, for 1942.

Strangely enough, I am yet to record a 'coronation' style frame with a '53' prefix. Go figure.

I look forward to you scraping a bit more paint off.

Warren, do you have any photos of the 6M version, or the 1947 version?
From all my searching, I can only find references to the August 1948 initial release of this frame design.

when I gave the frame date as 1953, it was based on the assumption that it had a missing or obscured "5".
The reason I asked for photos was to check to see if it had lugs. If it was fillet brazed then I would suggest it was a badly stamped "8" and not a "3" giving the frame date as 1948. If it had lugs then the 1953 date is most probable.

Thanks guys, I am planning to photograph the bikes in the near future and will post a link for you all. I have what I think is an awesome five star I purchased from a guy in Chicago, chrome lugs and campy parts galore.

looks like a 52M to me! so 1952, Melbourne built.
so not a New Look, not a Coronation, not a Elizabethan but a "Streamlyne"[sic]

before you get too far down the track, check that the seat tube is straight. A number have failed there.

what are your plans for it?

This one was identified by the seller as a 1950 Streamlyne sold on ebay last night for $518. No photos of the serial number.

Chris
what parts are you after?
many of the Malvern Star ladies bikes for the period are suitable donors.

What is the serial number of yours?
I see there have been three sold on evilbay in the last week, ($300-400 each)

Hey Clydesdale Scot,

Original front forks and would love a set of the crown cranks... Settle for forks right now tho

The bike is not with me so I will get back to you with a serial no, I believe it to be a 51 vintage taken from previous investigations some time ago!

Cheers, Chris

You are unlikely to ever find forks for sale.
If it were me, I would find a set of forks from the same period from another Malvern Star Ladies bike and try to get the loop added.
If you want to go down this route, then I can supply detailed photos and measurements for the loop.

As for the Williams crown chainring. This was not part of the original equipment for these bikes. I designed mine and had it laser cut.
It was just another folly of mine. The Williams chainset would be an easy find. With the chainguard in place, you don't see much of the chainring.
