Malvern Star Coronation "Elizabethan"

Postby Johnj » Mon Oct 05, 2009 12:14 pm

Just seen this one on eBay. It is a ladies Malvern Star Coronation Elizabethan, identical to the one in this ad:

Image

I haven't decided whether it is a thing of beauty or a hideous abomination. The styling seems to derive from the suspended hard-tyre safeties of the 1880s, so I guess it was "retro" (in the modern sense of the word) even when new. Even the name is a pun.

Does anyone know if production continued after 1953?

I was told that they made them for some time after 53 and that they were designed to resemble the crown .

Err ,on the MS Coronation here, ist seen in approx 53 ,production ran to approx 55.Gents models were a bland/boring design compaired. Paintjobs varied in the later ones. Some models came out with inverted curved top bar,and are now rare. My 55 was a deep purple (nice) once, now badly painted over and faded. The frames could be damaged at the seat tube /top bar connection if big mumma tranny did the canal jump effort !!! Nearly all fitted with single speed, "Favourite" hubs and Araya curve side rims.Much more usable in hilly Sydney if fitted with a S/A TCW.

Trevor,

Do you have the mens version or pics of one? I have a three star here which I suspect may be one because underneath the spray can paint is blue and gold colouring. I just cannot find any pics of one to reference from.

I also have a ladies one, just cant remember which way the tubes are. (Currently hiding in friends shed)

Guaranteed forever! (according to the picture).

How is THAT for quality build. I wonder if Malvern Star will still honour it.

Karen,i don't, but cuz Andrew has a three star model,(maybe/maybe not Coronation) with paintwork very ornate in original form ,although was weathered. He is now in the process of replication.I did see a gent's model pics at the now defunct museum, have none myself i'm afraid.I see andrew in a couple of days ,so i'll ask him for some pics. Andy have you any pics of your cranks for me,so i can match your missing one for your SS?

hi Stackyard
I have one of those with the inverted top tube, I have never seen another and any advertising i have seen shows the bar as per ads.
I was told by the previous owner that it was acquired in the 50's but they cannot remember the year, it had since been hanging in the shed in outback SA, I haven't cleaned it up but looks to be gold and blue under the dirt, dust etc. The lugs arent anything special but has the 3 stars.
From Memory i think it has a renak rear hub, saddle is italian (though may have been replaced), original wire basket and tyres.
Ill see if i can get a picture up

If you can post a pic up for those who havn't spotted one as yet, to see the difference would be good. I hope to have mine ready for the next Sydney Tweed Ride held in June, on the Queens birthday longweekend for Linda to ride. Would be very appropriate i would think. 8)

Does the inverted bar version pictured have a serial number anywhere?
Has anyone actually seen a gents version in the flesh? I would love to see a pic of one.
The brochure shot of a gents version referred to would be handy for my Malvern Star archive.

Hi Warren
My inverted Coronation has a serial of 3P 1468 which is located on the seat collar on the seat tube.
I too have never seen mens version of the Coronation however but I do know of a friend who has a chainring which i have seen with crowns cut into them much like BSA had shaped into theirs. I cant remember the make/model it came off but I would think that this chainring shaped with crowns would've been off these models??

I found the following link by doing a quick search on the NLA site... an ad from 1953.

(unable to save as a jpg to post here)

http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article ... coronation

As others have said it seems the colour and decals were the only changes for the gents bike.

There is NO room in the shed for the next bike! New shed rqd.

I found a postcard I had advertising the Coronation but unfortunately it is a repro and the bike is blue. :(

Silverlight, I was told that several chainrings with the crown were made and given to various countries as a gift. Each country was given one only. A long time bike store owner in Sydney had one but I recently heard that it was sold to a private collector. This information was provided by a reputable source it is just the number of chainrings that were given I am unsure of.

Warren, I have a very decrepid men's 3 star that has purple and gold paint underneath peeling spray can paint. I have yet had a chance to remove any more of the paint to see if it is actually a coronation. I will try and get to it shortly.

I'll also look through some of my old papers to see if there are any adverts.

Karen.
