Am looking for a vintage mountain bike myself right now and found this bike elsewhere on the forum, not sure if its come up in this thread, but though I would add it as its from the same period as Simon's bikes. Original owner thought it was 1990 too.simon.young wrote:Yea I wondered about that. Do you have a catalog or anything that would confirm its a 1990? Any details appreciated.Lan is listening wrote:I'm fairly sure this is a 1990 as the 89's had the triple triangle.
I have these 2 PBti.
Purple / Green : 89 Shimano dates + 89***** serial # (could easily be 1990)
Green / Black: I have a UK mag review from Jan 1991. Shimano dates 90. It has serial 90****** (Maybe the review was when it was brand new?)

find_bruce: Yeah I picked that one up off ebay . . . It was late 80s and in my size within a half hour of my place . . . I just couldn't refuse.
yugyug: I'm not 100% sure of the year, but by the date stamps on the Shimano gear it's 87/88. It's indexed downtube 105, which I think places it in a small gap between downtube friction and brifters which I think is 88-90. The first two numbers on the serial number are 88, but I don't know if that actually means the year in the Shoguns.
simon.young: Thanks! Well . . . it's definitely not up for sale just yet. In the month since I've bought it I've hardly ridden any of my other bikes This one's just a lovely ride so I'm probably not going to be selling it for a long time!

I have a feeling it's an 88 or 89. Here's the catalog pic (not mine, screenshot from ebay)yugyug wrote:
This (below) was in a June / July 1987 Mag in the States. You can see older decals in this one. Then on the black one has the same decals as my 90/91/92? PB Teams. They must have changed frame design after the Black PB Ti. The catalog screenshot (above) was from the states, but maybe the decal differences are OZ vs US?
What I hadn't noticed before is the triple triangle design in the review (below), vs the standard from design above? Maybe smaller sizes didnt' have triple triangle?

Nice pantographing and lug lining
Seat post will be a struggle to remove. It is so stuck that the clamp head rotated independently of the post.
And what's the story will the cable routing? Which way should they go? Doesn't look right.

It looks like the brakes are cabled the wrong way. I think the front should be connected to the right hand. Personal preference, I suppose.
And I'd probably get some aero levers and bury the cables under the tape.

Bid for it, paid a bit more than planned (paid about $130 I think), and went and picked it up. I couldn't believe it. It was a bit grimy and dirty but under the dirt it looked like it had never been ridden. It all looked unused. There was no way I could turn this into a generic 10 speed converted single speed. The retro gods would strike me down for sure.
The gods must have known this, as at the same time I had also put in a bid for a Repco Superlite. This one was well used and had had a hard life as a triathlon bike. reserve was $80, which I bid, thinking I had no chance getting it as Superlites were going well over $100 at the time so chased the Samurai. When I got home from picking up the Samurai I checked ebay and found I had won the Superlite. No one else had bid. So the Superlite got the file / sandblast/powdercoat treatment and the Shogun got buried at the back of the garage for a full refurb at a later date. 3 years on and it's still waiting as a few other projects have got in the way, but I thought I'd post some pics.
Just need to find some time to pull it apart, give it all a clean and put back together. Will be a great retro steel ride.

picked up a gumtree haul on the weekend, one item of which was of great interest to me
A Shogun Prairie Breaker Expert (think 1991) model in red, LX equipped, pretty rough but all complete minus wheels.
I had the midnight with splatter painted model, same Prairie Breaker Expert back in late 1991 early 1992 before I was run over on it and it was written off.
I expect red one I have acquired is the year before as has thumbies instead of rapidfire shifters.
Anyway, seems to ride ok, need to service and do some adjustments then will give it a good shake down out on the trails!

They are a great retroMTB. Very under-rated. I have a Team Issue and love it!drew76 wrote:Hi All,

just checked.
Not the Tange Prestige unfortunately.
If I recall correctly, I thought my midnight splatter model did have the prestige tubing?
Nice work on the Team. Always loved that one. Should have got the Shogun Team after my Expert was written off back in 1992. I ended up getting a Diamond Back Apex instead.
Anyway - Tange Tubing Pic, Made in Taiwan.

Sounds right. There were 3 Prairie Breakers. Expert, Pro and Team. My Teams w/ prestige tubing are Made in Japan. If the Pros were prestige too I might have to add one to the collection.drew76 wrote:Simon,

I looked at one yesterday that was lovely - unfortunately there was some surface
rust under the paint around the top tube cable guides. Had 600 group and some wheels
I didn't look to closely at but beautiful anodized gold. Not many Shoguns around here.
Unfortunately Img is not allowing for pic insert

It's a VERY stuck seatpost. Poured ammonia down the seat tube and let it sit for a week. Tried a big pair of grips with no joy. Drilled a hole throught the post and used a steel bar with an extension. The aluminium just tore through. Might have to resort to dissolving with sodium hydroxide.Lots of steel bikes wrote:

This apparently is Tange Prestige + Shimano 600. I would love this in my collection.... Must be a late 80's or 1990 build. Just before the Team Issue was released.
I thought there was a Prestige Ninja, this (hopefully) confirms it. Now to find one in better condition.

Nice colour combo, the pink logo outline and pink striping is distinctive. We dont get many triple triangle Shoguns here in oz. If you get it please post up some more pics after it been cleaned up. I'd be interested in the serial number + where it was made.Time2Bike wrote:it this one - I usually wouldn't post a link that's going to expire but this is the one -
