My bike is back in Sydney while I'm in Adelaide for the rest of the year so no pics. But it looks like I haven't actually got the right year for my bike after all - there is a similar Ninja on page 5 of this thread which is closer to mine - all have the 'galactic black' paint work (as far as I can tell from these photos) but mine and the one on page 5 have different decals (and stems and seatposts). So I'm guessing mine is an 88 or 90. Would love to see some more catalogs!

There is a 60cm Shogun Team Issue from the same period which has been on and off ebay for more than a year... seller is in a bit of denial regarding its market value...

You're right about that Team Issue.. there's PLENTY of other bike I'd find better value in.

I've been on RBUK, and found some references to Shoguns in the states. Below is an ad from 1987 Mountain Bike mag from Colorado i think, with a link to the magazine below. You can see distributors in Washington & New York

89 Ninja. I know it well. I used to ride to school on my TrailBreaker and dream about owning a ninja. Then one of the gr12 had one.... I was so jealous, looked at it everyday! That's next on the list. If anyone has one to sell? 58cm + At least now I know the year, and Tange Prestige awesome.

Simon,

Were you looking for a Ninja or just any roadie Shogun?

Nice katana, I thought you'd just converted it to gears? If you ever see that elusive ninja let me know :D

Cheers. I'll keep an eye out.

I need to put a shorter stem on as it's a tad long in the reach. Re wrapping the bar tape in my future :(

Looking through RBUK found scans of Shogun Prairie Breaker Team Issue test from jan 1991.

I'd love to get my hands on 90 - 92 Shogun catalogs. About 2005 I had the same camo PB Team, but it had thumb shifters and no u-brake. I wonder how many years they went with this colour scheme? And what a great name for the paint - astrofuzz?!?

Thanks retrobikeguy for scanning them in.

Here's a link to something I found online - Shogun is, or was, still distributed in Australia and in 2010 received compensation from Toys R Us for infringing their trademark with a shogun branded BMX.

Hi everyone, where do you find parts? Picked up a metro se yesterday as my first project bike and in need of a right shifter, I've checked eBay and put a wanted ad here so far, any other good online sources? I'm in cairns so local suppliers are limited. Thankyou Karen

Hey Karen, now the fun begins, well it would for me at least. Most of the enjoyment I get from doing a bike is chasing the parts. Often you will have to wait, sometimes you find them straight off and sometime you find the parts before you find the bike!

Evilbay is a good source, don't just use the .au site, look overseas as well. As long as you check out the seller's ratings you'll rarely have any trouble other than waiting for delivery.

I'm happy to find a frame small enough for me, 3 gears make it usable for now! I think I've found a later equivalent 3x7 combo shifter/brake doohickeys ...more googling required but st-ef51 look like they may work. Thankyou for your help

I found the shimano tourney from a us store on eBay. 3x7 were available. I got 2x7 for the Katana which work with the stock derailleurs. I just needed the down tube shifter adapters.

Shogun PB 3s for hire at the Novotel barossa.

Is it the 3s that are better than 1and 2s or the other way around?

Does anyone know what the Katanas and Samurais were selling for back in 90 and 91? No doubt it was a shocking price especially considering the wages then.

I have now changed the bottom bracket on my Trail Breaker 3, with some oil and a few you-tube videos I now have all 24 gears working and brakes are sharp as!

Cost to date:
Bike $30
Shimano BB $25
Ebay crank tool set $15
Rim tape $10
New inner tube $10

Total cost: $90

Sits in the garage next to the S-Works Roubaix with pride!

Shogun Ninja 1990 I think. Shimano date codes 1989 105 DT shifters, most other 105 is from 1990. The Strong seatpost has 90 stamped on it. Given it a wipe down, it's in pretty good shape, but needs some work. Mostly original, except rear wheel, pedal, and those tri-bars... YUK!

I would love to find a 89 / 90 catalog, as I'm sure the Ninja changed to a Spirograph type pattern in 1991?

For those wondering about dating of parts check out this link : http://www.vintage-trek.com/component_dates.htm#shimano

Simon that's the same model as mine and also the one you were searching for, is that right? Congrats, where did you find it?

Mine doesn't have any tube decals, does yours?

Thanks, yup exactly what I was after. Was a local find in just outside Hobart :)

No tube decals unfortunately, I wonder if there anyway to tell, such as the SL vs SLX difference with spiraling ribs..

Or they could make it easy as they do on their MTBs : Although now that I think about if it was prestige, they probably would make it obvious!
