Time for me to make an entry into this thread. A couple of months ago I decided it was time to get an old clunker as the ride to and leave out front of the shops kind of bike. Found a Shogun 500 on ebay that seamed to fit the bill and was the right size so I made the bid and won it.

I've made a few changes in the month of owning it, with the focus on comfort and function. First the chain needed replacing and the pedals got swapped to some SPDs, a second bidon cage added. A bit of riding convinced me to add an extra layer of tape the bars to make them closer to fatter bars I'd grown used to. A rack and trunk bag where fitted and lights mounted. My first hour plus ride convinced me that the saddle had to go and thankfully the friend I was riding with on that ride happened to have one he didn't want. The 700c conversion was because the tyres needed replacing and having an old set of wheels and spare tyres sitting in the shed a new cassette was a quicker and easier option than working out what 27" tyres would suit me.
Oh, somewhere in there I got a longer stem off ebay, swapped the bell for one that fit better and mounted the Garmin. Only other change planned is to fit some guards then it'll just be a case of replacing things that wear out or brake. It may also find itself with some different tyres on it at some stage and the guards removed to tackle an Audax Tar n Dirt ride.

Clocked up over 500 km on it so far and have been quite happy with it. Sure it's harder work to haul up the hills than the carbon roadie but a lot better for carrying the groceries home and being the 'slow' bike hasn't stopped it from taking a couple of PBs on strava segments.

Anyway, enough writing, here's a pic

Looks fantastic! Nicely done. I want to see those mud guards go back on, but each to their own

I don't have the guards yet.. that's the next thing I want to get. The taking them off reference was to possibly doing a mixed terrain Audax ride, they would go back on, along with the road tyres after the ride though.

Hi everyone, just joined up (finally) and this is my first post. In around 1993 I purchased an army green Shogun Prairie Break Team Expert as in the previous poster's photo. I loved this bike but only had it a very short while and then sold it. Been searching online and seems that this particular model/colour scheme is quite rare. Would be very interested in picking one up sometime (18" or so) so if anyone should hear of one going with as close to possible original specs (would love the original XT thumb shifters!), could they please let me know?

Previous bikes owned (the ones I remember):
Apollo III road (c1984)
Genini Club 105 road (c1987)
Specialized Stump Jumper MTB (c1990)
Raliegh Technium MTB (c1991)
GT Avalanche (1997)
Scott Scale 50 MTB (2010)
GT Rukus dirt jump bike (2012)

Currently.. none :( but perhaps on the lookout for a tasty old retro MTB!

Cheers
Barry

Dimitrizee wrote:I've recently bought the same model but in the green/white scheme but it's still located in NSW and I'm in Vic; a good friend will be transporting it to me soon but from memory the stickers were in good shape. I have some pics of it I can post up when I get a chance.
Fantastic! Looking forward to it. What would be ideal would be direct, side on pics and a length/height dimensions across the text generally so I can scale it.

A friend's Shogun Samurai was terminally damaged in a head on collision on the Yarra trails this past week. Rider was unharmed, but he probably would rather have damaged his body.
Poor little guy. Off to the great big scrap metal furnace in the sky...

New owner thrilled with it, as was i for the limited time i had to test ride it.
Hand over was today, with a mini Riverloop as the maiden ride.

Looks a treat in the flesh with the black parts against the frame colour, and the 600 gear operates flawlessly.
(some cable trimming to come yet)

Time for some updated pics from my rides over the last couple of days. A couple of changes since the last ones, Lugnut should be happy to see the guards on it now. The stand is gone though as it snapped and the front light has been replaced with a dealextreme one with better spread than the old one.

Hello All,
I figure someone in this thread might know what is the correct size seatpost for a 1990(or maybe 1991) trailbreaker. Its currently got a 25.4 post with 0.3mm thickness shim - a total of 26.0 , but the seat post slowly slips. When I measure the inside diameter of the seatpost It does seem bigger than 26.0 but not 26.2. I suspect the clamps been done up on a too small a diameter post so its squashed in a bit. Any one know this or can measure one? Of course I cant find a 26.0 or 26.2 seatpost in my pile of junk, but I bet I just chucked one in the last hard rubbish!

For some actual Shogun content, here's the bike in question...

Just measured a 89ish Trail Breaker 3 and it has the same 25.4 steel seat post installed. Get a vernier caliper and make sure what size seatpost it is.

If you've figured out the seatpost size I'd love to know too

Just picked up a Shogun Trail Blazer that my neighbour threw out in hard rubbish. Missing seat + seatpost

stage 2 was acquiring some sti levers and completing the project with some bling....I think the frame is about 2004 or 2005 in 6061
