Old frame query - help with info "BARONI"

Postby MichaelB » Thu Feb 04, 2010 5:55 pm

Hiya,

Looking at a frame on fleabay, that is stickered "Baroni", lugged, and has cast campag dropouts.

Seat post is stated as being 26mm - any idea of what tubing it is and any other info re the branding and potential history ?

looks interesting, maybe ask if it's got an italian or english B/B, that might establish if it is really italian.

I'd be eyeballing it first before bidding.
Given the lack of anything tangible to authenticate it's pedigree I wouldn't part with anymore than $50 for it.No brazed on gear lever posts either, so it' might make a good fixed conversion/commuter with the eyelets it's got.

26mm seatpost means it is not going to be a high end lightweight tubing like Reynolds or Columbus. It looks like a good quality ten-speed frame though, but unlikely to be a racing frame.

+1

Campag dropouts don't necessarily make it a top notch frame. These ones look like they were installed by a hack.

The lack of d/t shifter braze ons makes me nervous. The brake bridge looks like something from a K-mart bike, as does the seatpost binder bolt. Cable guides above the BB on an Italian frame from the 80's? :?

Of course, all of this might be wrong, and these are just some casual observations to my highly untrained eye.

I dunno, I don't think it looks all that bad. I dunno if I'd throw a hundred bucks at it though....

could be an older frame, seems odd it wouldn't have shifter braze ons otherwise. Difficult to tell though.

On a related note, there was a really nice looking Baroni up a few months ago. Sweet tricolour paintjob, pretty sure it was reynolds tubing, and I think it had a superbe groupset on it. I was tempted :D

Cheers guys. Will give it a miss, as if I do buy one, would rather gert a top line frame, rather than something just average.

Thanks for tips on things to keep an eye out for.

that Cecil that Brauluver pointed out has a long ST vs TT :|

Hi I picked up a nice Baroni Road Bike off ther verge the other day. It has a Reynolds 531c frame and forks and a Shimano rx100 groupset - It's just missing tyres, tubes and a seat.
Are these things worth anything? I did a bit of research and people seem to like the Reynolds frames. The Baroni crowd look to be an obscure Adelaide based custom bike crowd - they don't have much of an internet footprint. Anyhow, the bike's in good, straight condition and has the look of an 80's thoroughbred about it. I'm wondering whether to just sell it or fix it up. Any advice appreciated.

Hi...Baroni were built in Sth Australia, a lot of these frames were built by a famous Aussie cyclist's father ( can't remember name yet)
Suggest you contact Scott Baron..Balmoral Cycles E/V/park as he is the son the of the legend Mr B Baron who started Baroni

cheers

Thanks Fozzie, as you suggested I did contact Scott and he was indeed the maker of this bike! It was good to get a bit of background on it. Will probably sell it though as my cycling loyalty lies with my heavy , cheap, boring old Speedwell Stratus I saved from the dump. Wierd.
