Custom Skidstar

Postby stackyard59 » Mon Feb 08, 2010 3:06 pm

Seeing i'm now confined to the house prison  ,i might as well post up some pics of my ongoing work to the old Skidstar. Sturmey Archer is now 5 speed. Three speed selection by right side S/A twist shift. High and low range selection by left hand S/A twist shift. Three speed Cyclo cluster fitted to S/A driver, old Suntour Skitter, parrallel arm derailleur, friction shift Suntour shifter. NOS Huret speedo just in from the US, has 0.3 miles on it. Haven't had a chance to connect it up yet. Leather seat is Wrights. Although heavy by modern bike standards,it is surprising agile (unlike its owner !) and is fast .

Great old bike. I lament the fact that, 30 years ago, after respraying and upgrading my brother's single speed Skidstar to 3-speed, I sold it! :(

How many gears do you have on that bike? Is it 5 X 2 X 3 = 30 speed?

It looks great mate but I reckon..................................................

the light could do with a switch for high and low, don't ya think?

and that speedo, wellll............................

probablly needs a switch also from mph to kph......................................... just to give it a bit more balance :P

and how do ya ring the bell with all those gadgets.................. with yaa nose? :P

Regards
Andy

Thanks guys, all fittings on this bike are kept to the late sixties/early seventies theme.Purposely fitted small Sanyo headlight,no dull and duller switch needed, although i do have examples on others. Huret and Sanyo speedos were the most common, and MPH a must 8) .Hidden bell position works actually well and would be even better if, middle of the path, bud fitted dog walkers could actually hear it !! Gear numbers are now 15 speed,5 speeds for each cog on cluster. This bike will soon be converted to the full dress GT example(eg Stainless guards,black/white seat,Cantilever bars, etc, etc) and all fittings moved onto a custom paint cantilever frame.

Very nice! I had never heard of the Skidstar before I joined this forum. I get itchy fingers whenever I look at the couple for sale on Ebay ......
