Where to buy 22 x 1 3/4" Tyres

Postby G3A » Tue Feb 23, 2010 10:21 am

Hi All

Just picked up a Malvern Star - Family Star with 22 x 1 3/4" whitewalls. The bike is in quite useable condition, but the tyres are pretty flakey. Anyone know of shop carrying these tyres? Anybody even heard of these?

Thanks, would prefer whitewall tyres like the originals, but may have to compromise.

Is it 22 x 1.75 or 22 x 1-3/4? Sizes in Metric and Fractional designations are not the same.

Definitely 22 x 1 3/4" fractional. I made a mistake when I originally posted.

They are not 'metric' & fractional sizes, Oh no, perish the thought.
They are either Fractional inch sizes, or Decimal inch sizes, & of course similar appearing sizes have different ETRTO sizes [bead seat diameter] so have no chance of interchanging.
Carbine & SJH cycles, & Quicksilver BMX
Now that's AUSTRALIAN to the core.

Ive just picked up one of those same bikes, and it has the original white 22 X 1-3/4" tyre well-worn on front, on rear they have gotten a new 22-1/38" tyre but have not gotten a new tube, still appears to be a tube in keeping with a 22 1-3/4" tyre, and i think this may be the reason the new tyre seems impossible to get to seat correctly.

hopefully with a skinnier tube that tyre wil still be ok on those wheels...little chance of finding 22 1/34" tyres Id say..

I have searched all over with no joy, the 550A tyres don't fit. You may be able to get grey wheelchair tyres, but I have not explored this (I want to keep the original look). What I have found is 24x1.75 rims are only ~5mm larger, I fitted the 24s from one of my other bikes & it fitted fine. You need to get 24x1.75 dragster style tyres, not 24x1.95 mountain bike tyres (they are too fat). The mountain bike rims should fit ok. As my bike is not ridden too often, I will change the wheel size when a tyre wears through. Most 24s are 36 spokes, so it means new hubs etc. I have a spare set of wheels & one spare tyre. If you need a tyre to get your bike going. PM me & it is yours for postage.
This is the bike I tested the wheels from http://s295.photobucket.com/albums/mm12 ... er%20Bike/

Looks like you have one of those now rare oddball tyres sizes. if 24" x 1.75" wheels and tyres fit, then it's worth it. You can get slick 24" x 1.75" tyres.

http://www.bicorp.com.au/ProdView.aspx?Product=VT241S or http://www.bicorp.com.au/ProdView.aspx?Product=VT241 If you feel like spending money, Schwalbe also do a slick 24" x 1.75" tyre

Ive got another old tan coloured similiar style bike to the "MS family" and yes, although they look like 22" wheels, theyre 24", but do seem so close in size that the wheels probably would go on..

It has a backstep brake , whereas the Family has handbrake rear.

Unfortunately, the 24x1.75 tyres don't fit the oddball 22" wheels. The 24x1.75 wheel & tyre combination is a good fit for the bike though.

makes you wonder whether modern 24X 1.75 MTB wheels would go on..might mean losing the retro orig wheels, but would get rid of all your tyre supply problems.
