My guess was that it is a Europa. Back in the 80's they had a few frames with the backwards triangle like GT....QuangVuong wrote:That grey spotty one looks like an interesting frame. Any idea what it is?

Mate I was a sponsored pro in the early to mid 80's for Hillman's. ..and i can tell you they're custom frames don't have serial numbers. ..I ordered quite a few that gordon built Track and road, Barry will still remember me (Cameron)..Old Henry put me on board. ..barefoot wrote:It becomes a puzzle!barefoot wrote:

Serial on the BB shell says 838422
I've been in touch with Hillman.
Their custom frames had 4-digit serial numbers, so it's not one of theirs.
They sold decal kits in the '80s, so as Barry at Hillman says, "it could be anything".
So... I wonder what it really is?!
My immediate thought when I found it was that it's probably a fake. I know a friend used to commute on a 1980s gaspipe bike that was bought in the 1980s with Colnago decals on it. We've confirmed that they could stick Hillman stickers on any old pile of tubes... and there's nothing to prove that the Reynolds 531 sticker is genuine either.
But it's a bit harder to fake chromed Columbus dropouts.
And you don't put a Campy headset in a re-badged Repco Traveller.
So, it is apparent I have a high-end frame here... but... what? And why is it wearing Hillman decals if it's not a Hillman?
tim
edit to add: seat tube is sized to fit a 27.2mm post. AFAIK, that's indicative of proper good quality steel.
anyway none of my frames had serial numbers. ..ever. ..they were always one off's...The last custom one I got in 1990 has SLX stamped on the BB and the fork tube...that's it.
The cable guide setup is not something I ever saw on any of they're frames. .. looks like Ken Evans to me.

Maybe Specialized? Sorry bout blurry photos.
Biopace triple. Exage mountain cranks, derailleurs, brakes,
Anyone know the rims? Like inverse aero.
They say made in Belgium. Suzue hubs
Anyone? Two front brakes??? Both centre pull and side pull still attached. Weird
Seat is specialized.
The wheels were separate but looked ok so I grabbed them. They have specialized tyres. Might be the match?
The paint is a little lacking. Missing seat post bolt. 26.2mm seat post.

I don't think it's a Specialized though. I think all their MTB's used vertical rear dropouts by the end of the 80's.
The front caliper brake is their because somebody couldn't work out how to setup a cantilever.
The rims would be concave Weinmanns. They used that design for a lot of their cheaper rims in the 70's and 80's.

Viner is an old Italian brand. CLB was a French component manufacture in the 50's to early 80's.

Absolutely correct, but I would give good money to say that is a frame made by Technocrat (in Italy) for Viner to sell in the lower end of their range. Technocrat made frames for the lower end of the range for a lot of he famous Italian brands as well as quality frames for a lot of other people, Europa in OZ for example.singlespeedscott wrote:Nice find.

Very true, Technocrat made some great frames. Their output ranged from the 'production' stuff for the low to mid end for other brands to some really top-end stuff, especially for their own brand name 'De Bernardi". (my wife has one)morini wrote:Top find and there's nothing wrong with Technotrat frames. They even made a version of the Colnago Saronni so they can't be too bad a frame builder.
A lot of the top-end Europa's were made by Technocrat using the much under-rated Oreba tubing.

Thanks Scott. You'd reckon if they could attach a calliper brake they could unattach the cantilevers. Not that I'm complaining. 3 brakes!singlespeedscott wrote:Looks like a late 80's/early 90's mtb. Velo base reckons exage mountain was around in 87 and 88.
What other brands should I look at around that time?
It definitely looks like it has been used but the frame seems ok. The lugs do all seem to be different thicknesses tho.

And after the angle grinder was required!
Hated doing it but the metal was split open either side of the centre. Only way to get them off!

Yeah the interior rusting had made the alloy swell and crack on both sides.ldrcycles wrote:Holy mackerel! I've never seen bars that bad!
Same problem on the saddle post. But the frame looks OK. Just needs a bit of TLC!

Not a Kuwahara serial format. 1991 model maybe?
Altus LT gears, DIA Compe brakes, Sugino cranks. There's an Apollo badge decal under that paint, with 2 x coloured horizontal lines decals above and below it.

that bell is awesome, it would be suitable for the dragster/lowrider fellows who want to make a "rat rod"

These bikes are so rediculously heavy- REPCO wouldnt have sold many if they marketed them as the " Repco Superheavy" . they went by a couple of names over the years (late 70's to early 80's) but most commonly known as the Repco monoshock. the shock is when you try to lift it . how small kids managed to get around on them is a mystery to me. this example just needs some new paint

That's a cracker! Looks like a rear shock off a postie bike. Shame it appears that something in the suspension area has been bent so that the rear shock mount now sits on the frame...either that or the shock itself is not original and it is too long for the frame.mark field wrote:found this with a rapidly beating heart, but now i just feel i havnt any time to do anything so it has ended up where most unwanted items go.
