A friend sent me a link to this auction from ebay. What can I say besides holy sh**? Have a look at the link. I imagine you will have a similar reaction.

G'day
Crikey. From $1.00 to $6,100 and it is not even complete! Guess it was important to someone.

I trust that shipping was included in the price.
I liked the fact that the box was sold separately.

Nope, +US$30 for shipping to Aus
and +US$183 insurance.
Than again, if you have $6100 lying around to toss on a derailleur, another coupla hunnred ain't gonna make a whole lotta difference. (Though it'd be kinda funny - in a painful sorta way - if you won it and couldn't afford the postage).

What made it so desirable were the facts that it was a 1951 example, & that version was made for one year only. It was first year of production & it was the first 'production' variant. There were not a real lot of them sold either.
[The first version, in 1949 or '50 was not a 'production' model & I think that only about 10 or so were made. The first 'production' version was released in October 1950. The definitive production G.S. derailleur was the third variant, released in August 1953]
Next was the fact that it was in near new condition.
Not only was the original box sold separately, but the original control for it was also sold separately.
Obvoiusly two cashed up collectors wanted it bad & it was sold to a Japanese bidder & the $6,100 was in greenbacks, not Aussie $.
No feedback left by either buyer or seller yet, so watch this space.
