Thanks guys, the editor asks for a very large high quality pic so they can move it around for page seam and type etc..
My daughter will ride it in approx 2 years when she's old enough, she chose the colour for the bike..
The original saddle was a kids bell saddle so must have been replaced sometime after the bike came to Australia

Not a whole bike, but a big difference from before to after! Huret shifter caps off a 1978 BSA Tour of Britain. The one on the right did end up looking like the one on the left.

Idr,
What was the method?
Coke? Maserati Cotton Wadding(now Eagle one at Super Cheap Auto)? Autosol?

A home brand scourer pad, maroon scotchbrite, 400 grit sandpaper and some elbow grease :) . Didn't take long as they're only the size of 5c coins.

Been working on this Rapallo for a little while now. Its my first ever bike build and I had a lot of fun.

Cheers to tony (redrover) for the frame, and munga for the group.

And a massive thanks to Dan for providing general guidance/fielding my stupid questions along the way.

Looks great, I really like the paint scheme, i'll have to keep that in mind for a future build.

Thanks fellas.
Definitely learnt a lot of lessons on this build. Particularly in the paint department. As the old adage goes: it looks good from far, but far from good. Aha.
Took it for a 40km shake down this afternoon... still got a few creases to iron out, but all going to plan I'll try and join you guys for a spin on Saturday.

Man this thread has been quiet for WAY too long!!

My latest effort, a 1965 Local Cycle Co. roadster, made in South Brisbane. It has obviously spent a long time in a garden somewhere and just removing the parts was hard yakka, I had to cut through the BB axle to get the cranks off. The only original parts left are the frameset, headset, brake callipers and cable guides. Currently running a Shimano Nexus 3 speed but it isn't perfect with the Sturmey trigger shifter so something will change there. Rides really nicely.

Before: frame as purchased from the tip shop.

After: with the addition of parts from a hard rubbish pickup a couple years ago.
Group set - Shimano XT 'deer head'
Freewheel - shimano 600 13-34
Rims - Araya RM25
Pedals - Suntour XCII
Headset - Tange Levin
Stem and seat post quick release - early Suntour
Rolls saddle

Should be perfect for easy cruising, it has a very long wheel base and very relaxed angles. Quite happy with how this turned out.

Yes, painted at home, I own a sandblaster so that part of the job was relatively easy, the paint is from rattle cans. It has come up quite nicely though and I'll need to take some better pics to do the bike justice. These old 80s MTBs do make comfortable rides and I've fitted it with what is probably the best gear from the time. Quite like using the thumbies too.

Sadly, this will take over the cruiser role from my late 80s Reynolds framed Peugeot MTB which is a bit small for me, so I'll probably look at moving it on soon.

Lovely job. It will be pining for the trails. Those angles are great on downhill fire roads and surprisingly comfortable.

Tassie being Tassie, I met the former owner of this bike today. I can now confirm it was originally a Hillman Alpine purchased in Melbourne in 1985. The owner still has another which looks exactly like the before picture. I might see if I can locate some Hillman decals for my re-furbished bike.

Very good indeed, nice people who ended up giving me a few of the original parts for the frame (wheels & suntour XCII pedals) :D . They owned the 2 bikes from 1985 until 2013, lots of history as they travelled round Australia with them, told me how their bike rack carrying the 2 bikes fell off the back of the car at 100km/hr at one stage (scrapes but no major damage). Interestingly the patina on the other bike looks very similar to the one I now have which is how I recognised it (slightly less rust).
