Looks like it to me. Still, full Cromor would be OK. Even out of water pipe a Colnago would be a sweet ride and worth a rebuild.

Hehe!
I've been offered a set of 80's Colnago hubs .. Chorus maybe, maybe Triomphe thread on rear. Does anyone know what style of freewheel these would take?

Of course, thanks for reminding me of my obvious oversight!

:)

Still trying to decide what to do with this thing.. Campy or Shimano?

Let me put it to you this way: Would you put a Toyota engine into a Ferrari?

I dunno - lots of people buy Colnago brand new with Shimano on it. Good shimano, not rubbish shimano. If it was mine it'd be 7 speed C-record I think, but a sweet bike could be made with period dura-ace - it's quite pretty in it's own way.

I have a set of single pivot Dura-Ace brakes that would suit it nicely that are surplus to one of my projects...
So we get the leaders we deserve and we elect, we get the companies and the products that we ask for, right? And we have to ask for different things. – Paul Gilding
but really, that's rubbish. We get none of it because the choices are illusory.

To each their own... but a retro Colnago wearing Shimano always makes me cringe.

I am considering 7400 series Dura-Ace. That was a really nice looking groupset. I have a 7400 series DA headset on the bike already, actually.

A guy from the forum has offered me some Mavic tubular's which I'm also considering .. tubulars would certainly suit the mid-late 80's high performance european bike theme. I've never tried them to be honest. They look like a pain in the ass!

74xx Dura ace =The Japs got it right and taught Campag how it should be done.If your chasing an image,Campy will help.I have both a DA 7402 and C Record groupset sitting around,i know which one will be on my Nag

it's like eating cockroaches, but i can agree with blu_fz on 7400 being good quality. :|

shame about the cable pull issue - makes decent levers relatively expensive, although sheldon talks about alternative cable pull yada yada

when did 7400 come out? does it fit the timeline of your frame? i'd wager that shimano will be cheaper than colnago if that's a consideration.

ps your parts became my parts this arvo. super-stoked with those rings mate

why not suntour superbe/superbe pro? nothing like a challenge!

That they did, and it took Campag five years to catch up! However, they did.

Rarer that rocking horse ...... ! If you are happy with down tube shifters, as good a DA 7400, but prettier.

I love SunTour, I have two sets of Sprint 9000 shifters, which are perfect (7 speed) but no other SunTour bits. Going to try and piece together some Dura Ace, I think. Either that, or I go modern.. Veloce 10 speed looks hot. But I can't bring myself to do that.

Meh, my 2001 Cinelli wears Shimano, as that is what I had. In the end it's your bike, and you have to enjoy it.

Some will scream out in pain if they see it, but that is their problem.

Just post the pics when you are done !!!

Not of this time frame but worth pointing out, Rabobank have been running Shimano on Colnago for many years know. To the best of my knowledge it hasn't stopped Oscar Freire winning 3 WCs; his bike has never spontaneously combusted...

Just thought I'd pop in to say gidday. I'm the bloke who sold the Colnago, complete with Centaur cranks, Universal CX, Cinelli bars, etc, etc. Sorry about the state of the wheels. It was a commuter after all

Good Karma to sell a bike to someone who will do it justice.

Regards
CHRISTO

Thanks for the offer but I've decided what I'm going to do now. I'm keen to go with 7400 series Shimano Dura Ace (7 speed) and keep downtube shifters. But I'm going to run modern wheels (silver Shimano R500's) and a hyperglide cassette. I'm bidding on shifters and brake levers now!

sooo.... does that mean 9 or 10 speed cassette friction shift?

Just curious. Hungry eyes are looking across at my Miyata (ex-Blu-FZ) as donor for my Ken.

Nah Kym,
7 speed hyperglide cassette (13-26) with a 4.5mm spacer so it sits in the right position on the hub body.
Still really hoping a nice set of period wheels shows up though!

After really mulling things over, I've decided to run a modern groupset. It's going to cost me just as much to buy rough old bits to make a complete 7 speed groupset (either Dura Ace 7400 series, or old Campy) from eBay as it is to buy a new Campy Veloce or Shimano 105 groupset in 10 speed. I am keen on the Campagnolo Veloce groupset as it is available in a polished alloy finish which will look "right" on the frame. Thanks for the tip off, HappyHummber!

I ordered some alloy downtube cable adjusters today to suit, and I'll have to start selling off my retro spares to help fund a new groupset.
