Picked up this 979 near complete, minus the seat post for $50
I thought the 979 had a seat bolt or grub screw, but this one has the internal expanding 25mm seatpost. normal?
Has 600 tri colour levers, hubs, FD
the rest is a mix of goods.

expanding post is normal - they worked out that the grub screw was killing aftermarket seatposts i guess, and changed to the quill style. can't remember when, but google should know.

I did get the original seat post with it, just missing the seat clamps. There is a bike builder here that told me to bring it in and he will see if he has any clamps that might fit.

not certain of year, so for now i'm saying 1985.

was fitted out with heinz gruppo:
mavic gel280 tubs laced to 28h superbe pro w/winner pro 6sp cluster.

6200 calipers, 600ax levers.
6200 fd, 600 arabesque rd.
broken turbo saddle.
cinelli 1a w/66-42 bars.

should be good. frame looks rough but that's the way i like it.

Munga,
it seems there were 50,000 of the Vitus Carbone 3's made in the period 1978-1984
There were a variety of decals and placements
in no particular order
sample A
sample B
sample C (which I think you already know about)
and a recent one sold on e bay
as the e bay ones will be lost over time, here is an closeup of the down tube, and the whole bike (as proof it is a Carbone 3).
I would suggest that, over the production of the frame, the decals changed and there were more of them (top tube and down tube replacing the seat tube in block font)

Is there any evidence of other decals on your frame?

Have a good look at the last two images, (ie the ones from e bay). It looks to my eye as from the same period as the decal presented above produced by Greg Softley, which is the general period for your bike.
Might be worth an approach to Greg with a good close up image of your bike decal, with measurements to see if he can resize and restyle to match your vintage. As he has the base artwork it would be a quick job to do the required modifications.

cheers mate. no obvious signs that it had other decals, and the st decal is the same as the one shown in greg's decal sheet above, except i have one on each side.
