Carpi has a huge Piazza and not alot of people so it was great to wander around. This photo I got my wife to take of me so I could photograph the woman on the bike without being obvious.
There are old blokes on bikes everywhere in Carpi, just catchng up. It was great. Some of them had quite nice old steelie racers they'd converted to flat bar but whether smoking or not they rode around at about 10kph.

Haven't the bikes changed? The first time I went to Italy was when I was about 15, in the mid 70's and every single person seemed to be riding a full blown light weight racing bike with these neat little narrow flat bars. The fashion never took on over here but I brought back a set of these bars and pair of "racing" brakes to convert my Ashby into a replica of these piazza cruisers. I still remember the bicycle shops. They were a complete catalogue of everything Campagnolo, Galli, Modolo, Gipiemmie, Ofmega and all the frame makers available back then. Absolutely wonderful experience.

Apart from the well stocked bike shop in Carpi my wife found this repairer/restorer off the end of the piazza. Just a bikestand and couple of old bikes. I managed to make myself understood and he invited me downstairs ! He was only interested in Italian bikes, not surprsingly.
Anyone heard of Maratoni ? He had a few
