Manly (Syd) Retro Ride- Sunday 6 November
Postby Johnj » Mon Oct 31, 2011 11:29 pm
This was scheduled for Bike Week, but got rained out. Gentle pace, with a sausage sizzle at Shelley Beach. Looks like you can take your bike on the Manly Ferry to get there.

I'm thinking of bringing my 1999 Seaco Cannondale out with matching team kit

My view is that a late 90s bike is a bit recent, however if you personally glam it up on the fashion stakes, no one will notice. You have 5 days to grow a handlebar moustache

I found the number of bikes in Manly truly astonishing. There were bikes everywhere, beach cruisers, fixies, kids on BMXs, cargo bikes, basket bikes etc etc. Certainly more bikes than I've seen anywhere else in Sydney. Not much team kit to be seen and helmets were definitely optional. Certainly a real contrast with the car-centric inner west.

Love to see some pics JohnJohnj wrote:I went. I'll post some pics when I get some time. The highlight was the guy who turned up on a home-built penny.

Best not mention the h word and Manly in the same paragraph.
No one around here really cares if you wear one or not and it would be kinda nice if this remains the same.
The local coppers certainly don’t need head office telling what to do or not re the h word.

Interesting thought, as the biking scene appeared more vibrant than anywhere else I've been in Sydney. Ironically though, when I took to the road there was no bike traffic, only pensioners in Mercs. Granted, the traffic is terrible, but I think there's almost a critical mass of cyclists. Less parking spaces, more bikes on the road, and cars would become a very marginal proposition.baabaa wrote:Best not mention the h word and Manly in the same paragraph...The local coppers certainly don’t need head office telling what to do or not re the h word.
Anyway, enough philosophising.
A few bikes:
The guy whose name I've forgotten with his home-built penny farthing:
One of the ride leaders (with flowers):
The legendary Mike Rubbo (love the brim on his helmet):
I thought I'd taken a photo of a nice 1950s Healing, but obviously not. More pics here.

Alas our baby had a rough night and we were too tired. Probably somewhat ambitious to attend when we had a 2.5 week old anyway . As nana said though "you can take him with you next year".
