I as I guess many of us do having a look at ebay and saw this:

I cant remember seeing one like this b4, have done a bit of a search and cant find anything, wondering if our collective minds have any knowledge,
It looks to me to be a mid level frame?
The embossed 600 components were Shimano's top of the range in the very late-70's. I have most of a groupset - cranks and both deraileurs. Sadly, I don't have the levers. I can't remember the exact year that I bought it, but I think that it was 1978, possibly 1979. I remember that the 600 DX / EX came out just afterwards, which is why I didn't get the matching levers. From memory (faded though it is) I paid $109 for the crankset alone.

from memory also, I'd date this bike as 1981 or 82, mid-level to good, possibly Tange tubeset. A good example of it's kind, and very similar to Repco's etc. Looks near enough to minty condition, except for (possibly) the saddle, what with 27" wheels and so on. Anyone want an 600 Arabesque stuff? Think I've got some in the shed.
looking at the seat tube at the bb there looks to be the yellow moscow olympics sticker that a few M stars had on them around that time.
So based on that it should be post 79/80,
I know I ahve an article on actual malvernstars built for olympics in 80 or maybe 84 that were built from either 753 or something else a little random.
Its nice enough though!
I used to have a Malvern Star Double Cross frame/fork in the early 1990's. Unfortunately the chrome on the chain stays was in a very bad way and one of the stays had broken. The frame ended up in a recycling bin.
The double butted hi tensile frame is fairly heavy compared to 531db or equivalent, about the same weight as a straight gauge chrome moly from memory. I believe the frame was Japanese built, but if it was a 'better' tubing eg Tange or Ishiwata etc, I think M/S probably would have said so on the decal.
I'd agree with the circa 1980 estimate based on the arabesque 600Ex componentry. Incidently, at the time 600EX was only regarded as mid level componentry (roughly 105/Tiagra level today), Dura Ace was still Shimano's high end, and Altus/Tourney were the lower end.
I've only seen two before in 20 or so years, so I suspect there was a very short production run.
This Malvern star was given to me yesterday.
If the one you are looking at is mid level, well you might be able to use this one as a reference, because it is "low level". It has steel rims and hubs. Cottered steel crank set and steel handlebars and stem.
Shimano FE front derailleur
Shimano RS rear derailleur. (5 speed)
Serial number on the rear dropout is GO480
The bike has had very little use and the tyres look original.

what plans do you have for it??
I must say I was pretty surprised it went for that much but it is clearly a rare bike, and a bit of an unknown quantity.
Glad it hasnt gone to someone who will FIX it and leave it in the loungeroom to look cool.

As yet I have not seen the bike in the flesh, but the plan is to clean it up and keep the bike in close to original specification.
And ride it ....lots....!!!
Actually with 120mm rear dropouts, I might 'FIX' it for a period, but I never do anything irreversable to the frame or componentry.
